@ai6yr I am so very wary of current EV & battery tech. I don’t think I would feel comfortable having a charger in the garage. I would treat it like a BBQ and have it away from structure of house and not charge it overnight. Also, post-collision fires worry me. I don’t know enough to know if my fears are valid but that is how I feel currently.

@deewani @ai6yr A lot of people charge EVs in their garages. If it were a huge issue, we would hear a lot more about it. Charging overnight is making efficient use of a grid and the driver's time.

@CStamp @ai6yr I am sure I am biased by a recent near death experience and house fire believed to have been caused by an e bike battery in the garage. It burned too hot for team of 20 investigators to narrow it down. If I was not an early riser I would be dead for sure.

ai6yr,

@deewani @CStamp Your experience with the bike battery (and a lot of others) gives me pause in general on the bicycles... but I believe EV batteries are more reliable than bicycles. (That said, I have heard of several Tesla house battery fires :-( I'd like the technology to succeed, but Lithium batteries do have their problems!!

@ai6yr @CStamp Yes this is my current thinking. I am sure many factors play into it like quality control, wiring, etc

@deewani

If you're interested in learning about how car battery safety has evolved, then I'd highly recommend watching this video. They also cover the differences in quality and construction standards between the batteries for an ebike vs a car.

@deewani @ai6yr this article incorrectly classified this vehicle as an EV. It's a mild PHEV. Charging an EV is safer than charging your phone or laptop. While post-collision fires are a thing, they also happen in ICE vehicles. EV fires are usually slow to start and spread, giving occupants more time to get to safety compared to an ICE vehicle.

@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@jaimevisser @ai6yr TY for the clarification.

@deewani @jaimevisser @ai6yr lest we forget the Ford Pinto... https://youtu.be/lgOxWPGsJNY

I know three people who have had their ICE cars catch fire while they were driving them in the last ten years.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@douglasvb @jaimevisser @ai6yr Lol a common car of the 70s immigrant experience. We had the classic powder blue pinto when I was a little girl. I also went airborne inside an Impala on a trip to Disneyland. The good old days with no seat belts.

ai6yr,

@deewani @douglasvb @jaimevisser

LOL my dad had an orange Pinto. My memories of it were of watching the road through the rust holes, and poking bigger holes in the rust. Seat belts?!? LOL. (I'm sometimes surprised we survived to adulthood)

@ai6yr @douglasvb @jaimevisser Right? My baby brother was in one of these contraptions. https://www.flickr.com/photos/38354719@N00/281072331/

ai6yr,

@deewani @douglasvb @jaimevisser When my first kid was born (20+ years ago), we went to visit my parents, and explained to them we needed a car seat for them, and my mom said: "why don't you hold them in your lap" (this was WELL after car seats for children became law everywhere in the US, mind you). 😬

jaimevisser,
@jaimevisser@mastodon.nl avatar

@ai6yr @deewani @douglasvb Vivid memories of my dad bringing home all ten kids at my birthday party by just stuffing them all in the back seat and trunk of his Citroën BX. They all lived in the same village so the reasoning was that as no highway driving was involved this was perfectly safe.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@jaimevisser @ai6yr @douglasvb At least you all were enclosed inside a vehicle. Seat belt law in California didn’t kick in until 1986 which meant as a young 16 year old driver I would often drive a pickup with all my cousins and a 5 year old brother in the back via rural roads in the central valley. Reckless and horrifying summer fun.

douglasvb,
@douglasvb@mastodon.social avatar

@deewani @jaimevisser @ai6yr I rode in the back of a lot of pickups over the years.

Is it illegal now even if all of the seatbelts in the cab are in use? I remember back in the day in Oregon supposedly if they were all used inside, you could legally pile people in the back. I never got pulled over for doing it in high school. My high school vehicle was our farm truck 😅

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@douglasvb @jaimevisser @ai6yr I really don’t know. I kind of doubt that it is legal these days and I am sure it would be considered child endangerment. But I am sure the tradition continues especially on farms and rural roads.

@ai6yr (Boulder not Denver, but it probably looks like the same place to those of you who live in LA. 😉)

I haven't seen a story yet that says what kind of car, just an EV. Of course, I assume it was a Tesla ...

ai6yr,

@colo_lee LOL we may live in the LA area, but we far from LA... which is such a massive collection of different neighborhoods, who knows really what "from LA" is about? 🤔

colo_lee,
@colo_lee@zirk.us avatar

@ai6yr Hence the winky in my comment...

Denver and Boulder are similar, of course at a much smaller scale

ai6yr,

@colo_lee Indeed... Boulder is to Denver as Santa Monica is to Los Angeles, really.

(Boulder = big mall area (Pearl Street Mall) with high tech companies on the upper floors, Santa Monica = big mall area (1st Street Promenade) with tech companies on the upper floors.

@colo_lee @ai6yr not with that light cluster. Kinda looks like a ID3, but those lower door panels don’t match?

ai6yr,

@richardknott @colo_lee Bolt or Leaf, it looks like to me.
