@annajanejoyner
One major climate message that we've really got to elevate above all others is that addressing global warming is way, way, way, way less expensive than ignoring it!
The cost of solar power has dropped around 90% over the past decade, and battery storage costs dropped 85% during the same period.
Natron Energy, a pioneer in sodium-ion battery technology, has officially commenced mass production of its lithium-free sodium batteries in its Holland, Michigan facility. Offering an alternative energy storage solution with benefits such as faster cycling, longer lifespan, and safer usage compared to lithium-ion batteries.
"Lithium-ion battery prices have declined from USD 1,400 per kilowatt-hour in 2010 to less than USD 140 per kilowatt-hour in 2023, one of the fastest cost declines of any energy technology ever, as a result of progress in research and development and economies of scale in manufacturing."
Remember: fossil fuel companies want people to focus on what uses#energy so we don't talk about the supply side.
They benefit from #environmentalists spending time and energy bickering with one another about whether AI uses too much #electricity, whether to support more #nuclear plants, whether we should mine more #lithium to have grid scale #batteries, and so forth.
That doesn't mean we can't talk about these things, but be #mindful where you spend your energy.
With this catalytic funding, our small collaboration to develop an open-source flow battery for stationary energy storage can further develop. We're planning on finalizing our small-scale benchtop kit (for R&D/educational use) before going to a larger cell design.
Very grateful for their support and belief in the project.
Kris Ankarlo/KCBS: "California just hit an important climate milestone. The state now has more than 10,000 MW of battery storage. Just 5 years ago the state only had 770 MW of storage. And the energy storage industry says the state is on pace to hit 50,000 MW of battery storage by 2045." #climate#batteries#grid#energy#California
"Natron Energy has deployed plenty of their sodium-ion batteries. In October 2023, the company announced it would deploy its batteries as a back-up for Microgrid Encorp’s multi-megawatt power platforms. Natron also announced in December 2023 that it would be deploying its batteries in fast-charging EV stations in 2024."
"#Batteries the biggest player again as renewable records smashed in #California, reach 156 pct of load
Last week battery storage became, for the first time, the largest supply source in the evening peak of what is one of the world’s largest grids. On Tuesday, it discharged more than 6 GW for the first time, providing up to a 25 per cent share of supply, and was the biggest provider on the grid for two hours."
After over 11cm (about 4.34 inches) of rain yesterday, area flooding in lower parts of the city, causing a few isolated and hard-to-repair-quickly power outages to small pockets of residents and businesses. There were a few "glitches" as power was re-routed to help restore things. Long story short, three power outages since yesterday afternoon, two of them overnight, and I only know this because my #smarthome told me so via alerts. Fortunately with the batteries only the non-critical-load circuits were down briefly. Weird seeing all the neighbors' lights go off on the outside cameras, then come back on.
So glad to have #solar and #batteries to keep things up and op as the #weather gets increasingly intense each season.
Before everyone starts dissing #EVs and celebrating the #BMW's iX5 Hydrogen, believing that #cars are going to run on pure #water tomorrow, remember that the 2 primary methods of producing #hydrogen at scale are steam #methane reformation & autothermal reforming using oxygen and #CO2. From 'blue' (as aforementioned) to 'pink' or 'yellow', all production methods hide under the unicorn #green method, hurling us towards total #climatebreakdown.
@Hypx would it be fair to say you have an agenda 😂 ? While #batteries are problematic for many reasons (extractive industries looking at you), It is absolutely not "the same problem" as pushing for increased production of #methane, the worst greenhouse gas.
Want some #verisimilitude for your post-apocalyptic story? Four years after the pandemic started, 7 out of 7 examined #battery-powered candles had burst batteries. 3 out of 7 had destroyed circuitry and were irreparable. I restored four of the candles to working order with a lot of cleaning and scrubbing, but of course they required fresh #batteries.
Takeaway: Nothing battery-powered left for four years will work when found. Much of it will be destroyed.
Bonus: Gasoline has a shelf life and may be useless in 6-12 months. Sorry, no verisimilitude in Mad Max.
Could the National Grid be making better use of the battery storage facilities already available in the UK?
It seems that at some points in the last year, even when there was battery-stored electricity available to be drawn down, the Grid still used gas-fired additional generation instead.
Its likely to have be caused by a lack of up-to-date computing infrastructure to manage supply during surges.
We have a net-zero friendly solution but are (still) not fully using it!
Was checking out some reports about the DRC and found this piece by the NPR. Just another "detail" western organizations pushed under the rug when talking about clean energy solutions.
Cobalt is mined using basically slave labour. The mines polute both soil, air, and water. Although nowadays we have a lithium battery type (LiFePO4) without cobalt, it's still used, and also in e.g. alloys and gas turbines.
If you're interested in learning about how car battery safety has evolved, then I'd highly recommend watching this video. They also cover the differences in quality and construction standards between the batteries for an ebike vs a car.
