"Electric vehicle networks should be regulated to ensure reliability so drivers are comfortable buying the battery-powered cars essential to meeting the state’s ambitious climate targets."

Okay brain trust. I'm not using this as a thing. I've done some research.

What, in your opinion and experience, is a very good external battery for travel? I have one but it's quite old and needs to be replaced.

I hope this is just bad anecdotal data.

Rented a Chevy Bolt EUV for this overnight stay. Drove it about 40 miles.

Found a ChargePoint near the airport rental return to top it off.

First charger wouldn’t connect. Says the charger isn’t “fully inserted.” I have a plug in hybrid at home, so I know how these things work.

Switched to the second charger (of 2), and it started right up. Says it will take … wait for it … TWO AND A HALF HOURS to put 40 miles back on the battery.

No. Fucking. Way.

My province: population density ~= 1.7 people / km ^ 2. And the population here is concentrated heavily in the southern third of the province - up north, it's 0.2 or 0.1 people / km^2.

For large areas of my province, it will never be feasible to build infrastructure for .

This is sort of an experiment, I subscribe to some newspapers, and thought I would see how easy/hard it is to share links. LA times, I could not get the link, also could not find a place to complain, so sent an email to billing (a bug report w/ credible threat of cancellation). Houston Chronicle, I got this far: https://digital.olivesoftware.com/olive/odn/houstonchronicle/shared/ShowArticle.aspx?doc=HHC%2F2023%2F11%2F10&entity=Ar02101&sk=C4263984&mode=text

I picked this article because it mentioned something I did not know, estimates of electrical grid growth in coming years (and problems reaching that).

Could we end up with smaller batteries and roads that charge vehicles wirelessly? A bit hard to imagine right now, but some researchers and companies suggest it would work and would be more efficient.
“it ends up being much cheaper to build infrastructure that everyone uses, rather than pay money for lots of large batteries... The technology can do it. Can we get the political alignment to make it happen?”

The French government announced new funding for the roll-out of electric vehicle charging points to match the pace set by the EU’s new alternative fuel infrastructure regulation.

France aims to have over 400,000 electric vehicle charging points on its road network by 2030.

Today, the public network has more than 110,000 charging points, making France the second best-equipped country in Europe, behind the Netherlands and ahead of Germany.

Last night my 18-year old came up to me pretty shaken, and with a slightly fried finger: The USB (C?) cable attached to his Hyper-X gaming headset had exploded at the connector next to his ear whilst playing!

He was charging it via PC at the time. Honestly, I thought the voltage from USB ports were so low that this would be next to impossible.

Anyway, be careful out there and disconnect all your charging devices before going to bed!

The German government approved the allocation of €57 billion in investments to tackle climate change, as Berlin pursues the goal of reaching greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045.

The money will go into the Climate and Transformation Fund, which was originally created in 2010.

A large portion of the funding boost will go to the construction industry, to make new and old buildings greener.

The metric in this article is deeply flawed. "When it comes to EV chargers, Canada is way behind the U.S., analysis shows" https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ev-infrastructure-canada-us-comparison-1.6923582
They do admit their ratio falls down when a state/province only has a few EV owners. But hey, go drive in Yukon and Wyoming, because their ratio is best*. 🙄I don't know what "objective" measure they could have used to better describe the state of charging infrastructure, but this ain't it.
    *Don't. See plugshare👇

A road map of Wyoming shows many green Level 2 chargers but only a handful of orange fast chargers within the state.
A map of British Columbia shows a huge density of orange fast chargers particularly in the south and west regions of the province and Vancouver Island. There is also a string of chargers along the highways from Prince George to Prince Rupert.
A map of Quebec shows a large number of chargers close to the St Lawrence river and along the major highways.
