I have been building browsers for 30 years now. First Opera and now Vivaldi. My estimate is that more than 1 billion have used one of my browsers or both. Have you?

Feel free to share your story!

@jon I first used Opera on Slackware 9. It was an amazing experience.

@jon I believe I even used Opera on my Nokia E-series phone back in the day.

I wish Vivaldi was available at work. That is honestly the only thing keeping me from using it on all my devices.

I am in the 2% that want AI in my browser, by the way.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@rob

Maybe try to get your workplace to allow Vivaldi, if that is the problem?

Interesting on AI. In any case, if you want to use AI, you just go to pages that have it or add it as a Web panel.

@rob@skol.social avatar

@jon The very large bank where I currently work is not bringing Vivaldi any time soon (I’m afraid).

Great tip on the web panel. I will give it a try on my personal machines.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@rob

That reminds me of the earlier days of the Web, when there was an export restriction on encryption from the US. Thus non-US versions of Netscape and IE had 40 bit keys, while the US ones had 128 bit.

Opera was a Norwegian company, so we could deliver 128 bit keys outside of the US.

Still the banks in Norway and elsewhere would recommend Netscape and IE.

@jon We get Edge, Chrome or Firefox. I once installed Brave on my work machine (I have admin rights), but then I looked at a dark web site (The Verge news reporting site) using their TOR function and got pulled over by the network police.

Since then, no more “non-standard” browsers for me.

I believe it’s simply a matter of software support. Only so many browsers can be made available. 😔 And no one can argue I don’t have choice.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@rob

The FUD from Microsoft has worked. At the same time Microsoft is blurring the line between what is local on your computer and what is in the cloud, which IMHO is a security issue. So is the tracking that most of those browsers engage in.

There is a reason we are making Vivaldi. It is because those 4 choices are not good enough for our users.

@jon i think ive used opera when they started....before they packaged too much funtions in that nobody needed maybe around version 8.xx or 9.xx

@jon I have an old opera 9.5 wallpaper saved and some Opera developer wallpapers

XanderMeters,

@jon does the Wii browser count

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@XanderMeters

It does. We made it.

stooovie,
@stooovie@mas.to avatar

@jon first used Opera in like 1999 on Windows and 2002 Opera Mini on a Nokia S40 phone

jorgealvarez,
@jorgealvarez@ruby.social avatar

@jon I’ve used both and chances are I would be using Vivaldi if it weren’t based on chromium.

@jon I first discovered Opera when it came pre-installed on the Nokia 6680, and I have now been using Vivaldi for the last 2 or 3 years.

@jon Opera 2.12 is the reason I have spent half my life in Norway now.

@jon
You are developer of Vivaldi?

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@peturbg

I am co-founder and CEO of Vivaldi. Sadly I am not contributing much on the coding side anymore. I did more of that at Opera, where I was also co-founder and CEO until 2010.

hypolite,

@jon I'm using Vivaldi now! ☺️

clacke,

@jon Did you ever visit the Opera office in Linköping?

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@clacke

Of course I did. 😀

The Linköping office was very important. We started with a handful of people and we grew to a bout 100 in that office. It was a purely technical office and had a lot of really talented developers.

Linköping is a really nice town.

I spent a lot of time visiting all our offices around the world as well as have user meetups in different parts of the world. We had at most 15 offices in 12 countries.

zbrando,
@zbrando@vivaldi.net avatar

@jon I loved Opera mini on my dumbphone back in the day. Now using Vivaldi on notebook and smartphone.

zaivala,
@zaivala@hostux.social avatar

@jon ...and I use Firefox now

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@zaivala

Did you try Vivaldi?

zaivala,
@zaivala@hostux.social avatar

@jon Yes

zaivala,
@zaivala@hostux.social avatar

@jon
I should probably go a little deeper than just a simple yes. I have tried Vivaldi on a number of occasions, and it's just got too big of a learning curve for me. I also don't much care for using anything with a Google engine on it, regardless of how much privacy is supposed to be included.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@zaivala

We all make our choices. I am biased, but I believe Vivaldi can be a great option for you as well. There are things to learn, but that is because we have more to offer.

I also believe we can play an important role with regards to Chromium as we grow.

In any case, good luck with your choice.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

Obviously, if you are one of those that has not tried Vivaldi yet, why not give it a try?

Both and nothing else!

Opera 2.12 (1997) -> Opera 12.18 (end 2014)
Vivaldi 1.0 (end 2014) -> Vivaldi 6.7 (2024)

seppi_hofer,

@jon ... and I'm still using only Opera!

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@seppi_hofer

Time to try Vivaldi then?

nick,

Still have an 12.18 installed...

@ramon @WildEnte @nick @jon

The first time I came into contact with Opera was with version 5, if I remember correctly. 🤔
It's been a while. I can still remember the advertising banner in the browser. Those were the days... 😅

nick,
@nick@norden.social avatar

@HalleAndert

Before the ad version, you needed a license, if i remember this correctly.

Wasn't that btw. the main difference between 4.x and 5.x?

@ramon @WildEnte @jon

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@nick @HalleAndert @ramon @WildEnte

There was plenty of new stuff for every release.

mima,

@jon Do the #Nintendo DSi and 3DS browsers count as #Opera? :satrithink:

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@mima

I would say so.

TritTriton,
@TritTriton@shelter.moe avatar

@jon Both.

I first used Opera (7.11, with classic UI). Instant love for tabs and the fact that it did not share its history with IE (it was on a family computer on Windows ME…). Then I continued to use it from versions 9 to 12.x.

I did not switch to Opera 15, too limited for my habits and needs. But I had to switch for Firefox (with a lot of extensions to mimic Opera as much as possible).

When Vivaldi was announced, I was happy, but I did not use it as my main browser before the final version 1.0. And I still use it nowadays.

albert65,
@albert65@vivaldi.net avatar

@jon Vivaldi is my default currently. I even paid for the original Opera back in the day.

philry4n,
@philry4n@vivaldi.net avatar

@jon have used both, was active in Opera Community etc. Instantly migrated when Vivaldi was released 🥳

Geniusak,
@Geniusak@vivaldi.net avatar

@jon "opera" as in opera when you were there? Or does the new one count

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@Geniusak , I guess the focus is on my time there, but either way you are using a browser from a company I founded. I just have nothing to do with what Opera is doing now.

viljay,
@viljay@vivaldi.net avatar

@jon Opera for Nintendo DS was very special!
