Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

I'm regularly confused why anyone, especially parents of Autistic children, would think ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) is a good thing.

Sure, it might make your child compliant at moments when you want to do show-and-tell with your "friends", but you will be generating lifelong trauma.

I can't thank you enough for spelling out what ABA is. I've seen it referred to in so many posts by fellow autists but this is the first time I have seen anyone actually spell out what the initials mean so I could go look it up and find out why it is so bad.

I should probably go a little deeper than just a simple yes. I have tried Vivaldi on a number of occasions, and it's just got too big of a learning curve for me. I also don't much care for using anything with a Google engine on it, regardless of how much privacy is supposed to be included.

Tunisian #crochet - a new rabbit hole?

I learned the basics in the 1970ies, but didn't do much with it. A pillow cover a few years ago was a bit of a fiasco, so again, I put it away.

But today I saw this #CAL (which I mistook for a KAL initially).

https://knitterknotter.com/tunisian-blanket-cal-2024-hexagons-designed-by-cal-participants/

I now I want to try again - but with less splitty yarn than last time. And with much more attention to keep an even gauge.

The people that vote for the Oscars, don't look like the people that watch the films. The Academy is much older, whiter, and dude-ier*. Oscar winners, are the inevitable outcome of Oscar voters.

The question isn't "Has the Academy changed enough to where filmmakers from marginalized backgrounds have the same chance to win an Oscar yet?"

The question is "Will the Oscars have the same relevance to society 10 years from now, that they do today?"

(*In 2022, 81% white, 67% men.)

zaivala,
@zaivala@hostux.social avatar

@mekkaokereke
I only take a minor objection to this, in that I am an old white man and I love watching movies that show different types and genders of individuals. I was probably influenced by Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Mrs Doubtfire at a younger age, but it likely went back much further. I do support further diversity among the Oscar voters.

How the mighty have fallen.

I remember c|net as a standard-bearer of tech journalism back in the 1990s. Theirs was one of the few bookmarks I opened regularly to read about tech news.

Red Ventures has destroyed its reputation, along with all their other properties’ like ZDNet (the other fantastic tech news site). RV’s decisive pivot to AI is likely fatal; they will accelerate the descent of all their outlets into a content swill mill fit only for your blocklist.

#AI is an #enshittification accelerator.

after watching doug block's Home Page (1999) documentary a half-dozen times over the past year, i realized how much i missed having a personal home page.

not an itch.io page. not a github repo. not an imgur album.

an actual personal home page full of links to interesting places and people, and a little blog area to write personal stuff in. i haven't had a personal blog since the early 2000s.

i wanted to have some fun, so I hauled my dusty ol' iMac G5 out of storage and installed Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks. i hadn't used any of them in almost 20 years.

i thought it might take me a week to build a home page...

    ... it took me a year 😅

so this is my little attempt at rebuilding what we lost in the 90s. let me know if you've got a little homepage i can link back to in my hyperlinks area.

I remember my first page was on GeoCities. Then when Yahoo took over GeoCities I just had my own web page built. It took a few years before I actually got it working but all the information was there, I just had to learn how to do links better. I have migrated it a couple times since, and I don't know if it fits your definition of homepage, but it can be found at https://peacefulhippo.info .
