I've not been able to find much info about how the RCS standard works and whether it's end-to-end encryption; Apple seems to think that its encryption needs to be improved to bring it up to iMessage's encryption standard.
@mattcen@sirsean I have had end to end encrypted RCS on an android phone for years. You need both devices, the SMS app and the network operator to support it.
@sirsean And according to the aforementioned technical paper, at time of writing only Google was hosting a key server for E2EE, so it sounds like it was (is?) very tied into the Google ecosystem.
