Gives you some indication of the general direction of Massachusetts settlement: 15 Massachusetts towns are directional additions to other MA towns (eg Adams; North Adams). 7 are WEST, 5 are NORTH, 3 are EAST (and 2 of these, E. Bridgewater and E. brookfield also have a west and/or north counterpart), and 0 are SOUTH #boston#massachusetts#maps#newengland#usa
@universalhub shoot you are right that I missed south Hadley. The 0 should be 1. I didn’t include places that have no neutral (non directional) town next to them.

A narrative that has to be rewritten: the American South has great weather vs. terrible weather in #Boston. Have you spent Fall or Spring in Boston? It’s glorious! Sure we have a small number of days in the winter where it rains while it is cold, or when there is slushy snow, but fresh snow looks truly magnificent. We live close enough to ski, snowshoe, and walking on a quiet winter beach is priceless. Whiners were never taught to wear the right clothes. (1/2)
The number of >90°F days in southern US cities where it is horribly uncomfortable to spend more than 30 min outside, has climbed into 3 seasons. Plus Boston has world class public schools, medical care, universities, and sane legislatures. So when you want to move your biz and someone is telling you how great southern life quality is, think about the current reality, not Grandpa’s inaccurate perception. (2/2)
@gallaugher@ecken can confirm this 😸😸 we were just talking last night about how I was so worried how he’d feel about the weather but he’s been loving it
Dear reader, if you've found this or past #Boston weekend threads useful, holler - especially if you end up at one of these events.
I curate these weekly threads, exclusively here for the fediverse. I'd like this subset of the fedi to grow beyond ~12 bostonians shouting about how much we love bikes.
Boosts, sharing local-ish events you're interested in, and tagging posts with #BostonWeekend help to that end, and likes just make me feel seen (which keeps me motivated to spend time on this entirely non-commercial project).
Vaguely sick so randomly browsing Wikipedia and so I discovered the WASPiest Boston Brahmin ever, Rev. Paul Revere Frothingham. I am not sure who wrote this mini-biography (it reads like a contemporary obituary?), but it's hilarious, e.g. "He rejoiced to live in a creative and prophetic time, and in manly, rational, wholesome fashion he dedicated his life to certain compelling ideals."
