James Leslie Mitchell (1901–1935), better known as Lewis Grassic Gibbon, was born #OTD, 13 Feb. Author of SUNSET SONG – & many other titles from #HistoricalFiction to #ScienceFiction – he is one of the most important #Scottish writers of the #20thcentury
Regina Erich compares the original #German#translation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s A SCOTS QUAIR trilogy published in the #GDR between 1970 & 1986, with its more recent republication in a unified Germany
WHENCE COMETH “RAILROADING”? SOME HISTORY OF THE TERM, AND ON THE GERMAN LOVE FOR TRAINS
Articolo molto interessante (in inglese) sulla nascita del termine “railroad(ing)” nel mondo dei giochi di ruolo a livello storico, basato su una ricerca su forum e riviste e con alcuni esempi.
While discussing migration categories for #WikiTree, I learned that most of the world apparently knows the former "German Democratic Republic" (#GDR/ #DDR) more commonly by a translated version of the name "East Germany". But my favorite was the Portuguese version "Alemanha Oriental".
The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, was a defining event for Germans who had finally united. But this story of people's triumph scared the s**t out of Vladimir Putin and made him eventually leave Germany.
At a routine press conference on November 9, 1989, an East German spokesman mistakenly announced that checkpoints in the Berlin wall would be opened. The rest is history.
"An irrefutable demonstration of the #Soviet bloc's #antisemitic repression came in 1952, through a show trial held against Rudolf Slansky, general secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, along with 13 other high-ranking officials in the country. The rhetoric used during the trial was blatantly antisemitic, and it led to the death penalty for many of the Jewish defendants.
Pressure was also put on the #GDR's chairman of the Association of #Jewish Communities, Julius Meyer, an early member of the Communist Party and an Auschwitz survivor. He fled to the West in January 1953, with many other East #German Jews.
It is estimated that up to a third of the GDR's #Jews left during that period, though historians cannot provide numbers to this day."
On my way back home tonight, a car was parked in the cycle lane. I rang my bell as I passed it and saw a lady on her phone sitting in the driver seat.
I said "This is a bike lane, you can't park here"
She ignored me.
I stopped in front of her car and took my phone out, snapped a picture of her car.
She immediately drove away.
I did too.
3 minutes later she appeared next to me, slowed down to my speed and yelled "why did you take my photo?"
@EricLawton@pezmico it's what I call "#DeathStrip" because it's more lethal than the #GDR's border whilst forcing cyclists into the #dooringzone and incentivizing illegally tight takeovers by cars.
In early '70s Fidel Castro visited GDR. There was much kissing and hugging, and then leaders went on to serious business. Namely, #Cuba got access to GDR state-owned company Nordsternzucker VEB Halle, for re-export of Cuban sugar, and GDR... well, GDR got an island. Ernst-Thälmann-Insel, formerly Cayo Blanco del Sur.
Twenty-something years later, Germany has reunited. Unification treaty was long, boring and detailed as only Germans can do.
It does not mention the island.
So, it was never “reunited” with West Germany and thus should remain the last GDR territory. Unfortunately, Cuba's stance now is that the gift was “purely symbolic” and GDR, well, does not feel well enough to put any claims...
Last night, I lost a gentile friend because I refused to block every Jewish person on social media who's ever been accused of Zionism. She ended up saying some really awful, self-harm baiting stuff to me. I'm still bummed out.
Likewise I can't deny the existance of "#Neonazis in Suits" aka. #AfD and that they have a serious amount of backing in the former #GDR.
That doesn't mean everyone there or in #Germany in general is receptive to them and there is widespread #resistance and protest against them, with louder and louder calls to ban said Neonazi Party!
'The email, which the trooper sent to a superior, suggests that Texas has set “traps” of razor wire-wrapped barrels in parts of the river with high water and low visibility. And it says the wire has increased the risk of drownings by forcing migrants into deeper stretches of the river."
Exclusive: Texas troopers told to push children into Rio Grande, deny water to migrants, records say
Russia just officially erased trans people, and in the nAnti-trans legislationame of Christianity no less.
The Duma passed and Putin signed legislation that bans trans medical care as well as adoptions by trans people. And they also not only banned marriage and ID changes, but legislated any that already exist all be reversed.
"The Russian state now designates transgender people as 'enemies of the people'"
American Republicans must be so jealous of their master.
Some had luck getting alongside trucking roads prior to the invasion of the remaining Ukraine, and I don't think it's appropriate to ask them what hell they went through, cuz #Frontex nowadays makes the #GDR's border look like a friendly checkpoint in comparison....
Espechally wirh Poland and other nations conducting illegal #Pushbacks...
If the concern about "fairness in sports" with the trans panic were valid, you'd see a pattern of coaches trying to recruit trans athletes to their teams to get an edge.
@geekysteven yeah...
Yet the only cases that come even close were the systemic #Doping|s of Athletes from the #GDR to the point that female athletes basically got non-consensual HRT...
But that doesn't work the other way around - in fact the #TransPanic in #Sports only saw #cis#women get banned because their natural testosterone is above an arbitrary limit...
