Emacs

rml, (edited )

I would love to start developing for smartphones, creating a proper client totally reimagined for the smartphone is long overdue and a project I could really sink my teeth into. You know the popup keyboard on your phone? You think Steve Jobs invented that? No he didnt, Richard Stallman did, it's called a minibuffer. Emacs was doing all this stuff in the 80s, and way better, even.

But I can't help but hate all the frameworks surrounding mobile development, ie React Native, Swift, Flutter etc, but also from my experience as a user, the apps I've tried that were made with alternative frameworks like , which had to downsample and skew the resolution to fit my phone's screen, so it didn't seem to even feature responsive design; maybe ok for the hospital software they designed it for but not something for creating applications that the people will use out of their own volition.

I'm pessimistic that "there is no alternative" but seeing how nicely is coming along, I'm hoping that I may be wrong. Is there anything promising out there in the space?

@rml have you seen the discussions in the emacs lists by Po Lu to merge proper #Android support into #Emacs? (with optimizations for Android UX)

@rml since the last week, the current iteration supports file loading, and there's a chance that it will support saving within a few days, so things are getting seriously serious :)

(and once I implement the ability to scroll through documents, it's likely going to become Actually Usable)

really like the second feature offered, which is the ability to drag the buffer name from the bufferbin sidebar to the desired window. Imagine having multiple window split and just dragging a buffer into one of them. If there’s a time to use a mouse with emacs, that might be it 🫢 https://github.com/blueridge-data/bufferbin

summeremacs,

One more thing: My post on Reddit (https://fashionsocial.host/@summeremacs/110646246358081748) apparently caused a bit of a flame war against me! (Nothing bad…and it was expected).

It's funny that a lot of people were responding as if I hadn't outright written that should either:

  1. Change the standard OR
  2. Keep it the way it is and just insert something into the tutorial to explain it so that it's clear.

You'd think that a bunch of programmers would understand a simple OR statement, right?

I guess not. 🙃

@summeremacs The suggestion to discuss this on emacs-devel & offer help making a tutorial patch was great, IMHO

summeremacs,

@ctietze Yea I've been really really busy today so I didn't have time to write it yet but I have the docs open in the right place to insert stuff so I can get the context before writing it. 👍

The Emacs Reference Card is very handy! And if you master what's inside, you'll save way more than $3 of time. https://u.fsf.org/3iz

Just came across this one. Love it!

summeremacs,

I posted a little rant on

Feeling better now. Have drink. Calm. 🧘🏼‍♀️🍹

@summeremacs that is so good :) emacs need better default settings, that's certainly the case.

summeremacs,

@mykhaylo @jameshowell Somebody suggested I look at the tutorial docs (they gave me a link) and then I can write what I want to add and they'll submit it for me. So I’m gonna do that soon (Already pulled up the section I think it should be in)
I just don't know if I'll have time for it today but I'm gonna give it a shot. 🙃

package persist-state 0.3 available on (stable) MELPA.

This package regularly saves your Emacs state (bookmarks, history,
recent files, etc.) when idle for a brief moment. In case Emacs is
idle for a longer time, no state is saved.

Version 0.3 adds support for regularly saving your buffer positions using the builtin saveplace package.

not_null_p,

In case you didn't know, the combination of , [1], and -tube [2], turns into a powerful and featureful, RSS-based interface for watching on your terms.

If you are sick and tired of not showing new videos from the channels that you follow, then give this setup a try. I'm loving it.

Democratize can extract thousands of usage examples from Emacs Lisp libraries and, among other things, insert them into Helpful buffers when you look up a function. https://flandrew.srht.site/listful/sw-emacs-democratize.html

Emacs for Android is an interesting exercise in software portability. And besides, given Doom can run on a fridge, why not Emacs on Android?
