Fast Company reviews 6 Twitter replacements, and author @harrymccracken calls Mastodon the "heir apparent".

He says the Mastodon crowd is "friendly and engaged".

And he observes that Mastodon has higher interaction even with lower follower counts.

@atomicpoet Mastodon Interaction is higher because if you make good posts people will acknowledge them as that - on Twitter most people don't even have a choice whether to acknowledge them as the algorithm straight up won't show them your posts

Correct 👍 😊

@atomicpoet I use and as the front end. After using for a short time, I deactivated my account. Haven’t missed the experience since.

@atomicpoet @harrymccracken @fediversenews The key difference between mastodon and all the for profit twitter replacements is the lack of algorithm.

There's nothing to resurface stale posts. And (without retoots) nothing that's going to bring people I don't follow into my timeline because of how shocking the thing they are saying is.

Mastodon is a proof by counter example of how toxic algorithmically boosted media is for humans.

@harrymccracken you might like @megalodon (android). The "post this" feature is essentially QT and the lists and columns features are great for curating your own lists. Fyo

girlbaus,

@atomicpoet @harrymccracken @fediversenews seeing no full text search is disappointing. Search bar (and for you page) is the main way I navigated the previous site. I can understand not implementing this to avoid bots but, it makes hashtags super important, and folks haven’t figured that out yet/arent used to hastagging EVERYTHING to make it discoverable

That's a good point about the hashtags; compared to other social media I've tried, I feel like I have to use hashtags way more often on Mastodon.

girlbaus,

@ina @atomicpoet @harrymccracken @fediversenews the biggest thing holding Mastodon back beyond the learning curve for instances (now called servers) is the total lack of search. If I go to the search bar and enter a topic, instead of seeing a bunch of tweets or accounts that discuss that topic, it is literally empty. There’s no “here’s how to find what you want” tutorial. You have be able to guess the hashtag or go find an acc name you know.

@girlbaus @ina @atomicpoet @harrymccracken @fediversenews Depends on your instance. Some have enabled elasticsearch which gives you full text search of your own posts and those you’ve interacted with (like, boost, bookmark). Others (Universeodon maybe?) have enabled full text searching of every post locally known about (federated timeline).
Non Mastodon servers have full search.

RMiddleton,

@atomicpoet Shared this morning with my Instagram followers. It’s a fine line, wanting to lure people over while not being a broken record. I talk about a lot on platforms. It may be 1/3 to 1/2 of what I share there 😬 I dunno. I don’t care if I drive away followers really & I’m an artist. I’ve always shared a mix of my images, ideas, & journey. Choosing to spend time on the instead of & is part of that.

I’m on ice cubes app for iPhone without ability to scan text. Will replace this description ASAP.

JamesTDG,

@atomicpoet @harrymccracken @fediversenews that's thanks to the fact that we actually give a fuck about each thing we say to each other, we know there's a human beyond the screen

The most important thing is and I will keep saying this.
No matter what happens and where, here it should remain as it is
If anyone can write about it being better, more human and active here, it's me
On Twitter I started to shout the injustice of the world into the world
I fought...what came out...nothing
Here it is much better
Moreover, on Twitter, much more malice and negative attitude to everything and everyone
It depends on us how it goes on here.

“If remaining on Twitter becomes untenable” 🙄 What else could happen to make this happen?

jupiter_rowland,

Fast Company is good. They're pretty much the only medium that has acknowledged #OpenSimulator in the last ten years or so. That was almost exactly a year ago
