Spontaneously started in co-op with @mhhhkathi yesterday. Fuck, we're back in the addiction spiral. 😅

I guess Baldur's Gate has to wait a bit longer now as Vampire Survivors is much more compatible with a small child.

eaglw,

@kaiserkiwi @mhhhkathi how is the coop of vampire survivors? Can you progress story with it?

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@eaglw Regular Gameplay, yes. The new added Adventures are a separate part that doesn't even have co-op (yet?).

But you progress completely normal and unlock everything you unlock without Co-op

But seriously. Fuck every developer that decides their game is more important than the life of the player.

Why are there still games that I can't pause? Especially in Singleplayer/Couch-Co-op. Especially² in cut scenes.

Looking at you and

And as this wouldn't be a big problem when Sony would adopt Quick Resume from Xbox, a big 🖕goes to too.

I absolutely understand that the didn't launch with Quick Resume. It's a genius feature obviously nobody thought about before Microsoft implemented it in the , but come on. It's so many years now and this is fully a software implementation.

Someone at Sony could've figured it out already. They just seem to have no intend to make the PS5 better for gamers and the planet (huge energy saving potential) at the same time. Why should they? The PS5 sells like crazy.

Anyways. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. I'm Marco and I'm frustrated, because I just want to play and gaming studios target only teens and mid-twenties these days. 👴

@kaiserkiwi The Steam Deck has by far, hands down, the absolute best quick sleep/resume of any console. It's insanely fast and works with absolutely everything. Only downside is they haven't enabled the multi-resume they described when it first launched, which was the ability to suspend multiple games at once. They haven't enabled it yet is because a future revision of SteamOS is supposed to allow you to suspend a game on one device, then resume it on another which is mind blowing.

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@GabeMoralesVR Switch is a bit quicker, but yes. I have both and love it. But that's far away from Quick Resume. That feature is the second half of your post.

Even power loss doesn't kill the game. You can always resume where you left and this should be standard one year after the Series X released…

GabeMoralesVR,
@GabeMoralesVR@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@kaiserkiwi It's not "far away from quick resume," it's the exact same mechanism, they simply haven't enabled the full featured version yet. They discussed their quick resume feature before the Steam Deck launched and said they were waivering on whether to ship with multi-resume enabled or limit it to just one resume until the desktop version of SteamOS is ready. Plagman discussed how the deck could already suspend and resume multiple games at once.

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@GabeMoralesVR What Sony, Valve and Nintendo does is holding the game in Memory. The Xbox does this only for the current game. But even this has a Quick Resume state already if the Xbox loses power. Its not the exact same mechanism.

If you lose power on your Steam Deck, the state is lost. This doesn't happen on Xbox.

GabeMoralesVR,
@GabeMoralesVR@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@kaiserkiwi It quite literally is the same mechanism, if you use quick resume from desktop mode on the steam deck, it persists even between total power loss, precisely because it works exactly as I described. It's nothing new, it's merely a quirk of how CPU schedulers already work.

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@GabeMoralesVR Just tested it a few days ago accidentally when battery died when it was on standby. The game was gone. Tested it now with a reboot. The game was gone.

So what you're talking about. The feature on Xbox has nothing to do with the CPU. It's completely disk based and enabled by the SSD. That's the reason it would be easy too for Sony, as their SSD is much faster. The Steam Deck versions with SSD could use it too.

You're talking about a completely different tech that probably could get you to something similar. But it's just not the same. Please read about what Quick Resume is.

@kaiserkiwi I wish every game had a "It's been a while since you last played, want a recap?" feature.

@Jbasoo Abso-fucking-lutely. For Story and Controls.

@kaiserkiwi Yep. Where am I? What just happened? How do I do stuff? What are the game mechanics? etc.
