"Nobody wants at trump and biden rematch" is such fucked up weasel wording. disgusted to see it so often in the press.

It's not a wrestling match. Like 99% of people want one or the other. Obviously Biden voters don't want Trump. Trump voters don't want Biden. I bet Obama voters didn't want McCain.

People don't want 'both' because they're almost complete opposites, who could possibly think both are perfectly acceptable?

violet_cerue,

@SirTapTap
i might have hallucinated this but i swear i remember some liberal back before trump won saying shit like "how graceful would it be if clinton voluntarily called off her run and let trump win" so there is possibly one person

@violet_cerue@toot.garden avatar

nobody's pointed out yet that the first three letters of hetzner is "het." this obviously stands for "heteronornative."

also, if you look at cyrillic script, Нет is a visually similar word to the english "het." Нет means "no" in russian (according to DeepL), which obviously means "no yuri" in this context. the danger was in plain sight all along and us fools saw it, because we were distracted by all the yuri

Retro gamers: “You just think console gaming is overrated because you’re too poor to pay $500 for the ‘complete in box’ version of Ocarina of Time!”

Me: “No, I’d just rather pay $10 for Half-Life – which I’ll actually play instead of keeping it in box while waiting for the optimum time to resell it on eBay.”

And yes, this is an actual conversation I’m having right now.

LOL at this Karen who is outraged – outraged! – that I’m not having fun in her preferred manner.

In all seriousness, it is a bad look to blame war and violence on video games. It is equally problematic to imply that people who enjoy shooting games are intrinsically violent people.

I am playing a futuristic submarine game. Believe me, I am very unlikely to hijack a submarine and start torpedoing everything that moves.

Also, why are you implying that women don’t enjoy shooting games? My 10-year-old daughter loves Splatoon and Fortnite, and she would be quite offended if you told her those games are not for her.

Keep your gender toxicity out of my mentions.

@violet_cerue Yeah, it would. Most implementations assume they can reach others without anything special, which is an assumption that immediately breaks.

Most of them have some degree of support for Tor proxying, and it's also broken on most of them.

violet_cerue,
@violet_cerue@toot.garden avatar

@lispi314 I figured as much. It would still be cool to have a more anonymous fediverse, especially as governments in different countries become more authoritarian.

You might think that Musk attempting to remove the block button on Twitter / X doesn't make any sense, but it's a logical conclusion of Dorsey's belief that centralized social media is a revolutionary idea that will take us out of our filter bubbles and bring us together. The ability to block users stands in the way, so off it goes. Dorsey also opposes block buttons too.

It should go without saying that this will make fights and harassment on this platform far worse.

I don't know if Musk will be able to pull it off, but I think it's a good indicator of the mindset these folks have and the fundamental flaws with their worldview. People should come together, but they should come together on their own terms. If you don't have agency over who you have conversations with, the ability to chart your own social graph, it will cause unnecessary conflict and the experience will be worse for everyone.

Also, don't be surprised if they have a change of heart about the mute button in the future. The same points that a person with this point of view has about blocking apply to muting too.

i've been using the netsurf browser on some of my qubes VMs over the past several weeks. it's a FOSS browser that runs on it's own unique browser engine rather than a fork of google's chromium or mozilla's gecko engines. if you use it in conjunction with search engines like marginalia or wiby then you can get a pretty solid experience browsing old web 1.0 sites, yesterweb-style stuff, blogs, etc. it's not very good for browsing most of the modern web. that can be a good thing depending on your POV.

Every argument I have seen so far for not immediately defederating from boils down to one of two points.

  1. The security of is rubbish; blocking won't help.

To which my response is: Yes, mate, I'm sure you're also handing out copies of your house key because crowbars exist.

  1. The users of don't deserve to be blocked out.

That's something I agree with, actually. But they're not my responsibility. The accounts on my instance are. Which makes this something...

violet_cerue,
@violet_cerue@toot.garden avatar

@jens point one is the best argument against defederation, which is why admins should also block their IP address range :)
