ai6yr,

I appear to have a volunteer monkeyflower (mimulus) growing out of a crack in the patio.

@ai6yr I LOVE monkey flowers. Probably not the ideal location for it, though. lol.

ai6yr,

@exador23 Fascinating species, they only grow on the north facing side of the hills here, not west or south, and they are limited to a tiny bit of range here wedged between the city. (there's also a population of cholla here not found anywhere else). I'm wondering if that's a result of the homes protecting the monkeyflower and cholla from the sheep they used to run here, a vagary of the geology/soils, or what.

@ai6yr I hadn't noticed that distinction of growing habitat. See them along the 33, but not in abundance. wonder if that's why.

ai6yr,

@exador23 Possible. They are extremely dense here -- forest of monkeyflower, impassable. No idea what pollinates these particular ones (it's not bees!).

@ai6yr could be the little native bees.

Some of the varieties available in select nurseries are gorgeous. There's a dark maroon one ringed with yellow/orange, and a fiery orange & red one.

Monkey flowers amid a white sage plant, with yellow bulbine and lavender baja sage blooms poking thru. The monkeyflowers are maroon colored with yellow/orange at the very tips of the petals.

ai6yr,

A different, native monkeyflower in my yard.

ai6yr,

** also, random, Android insists on correcting "crack" to "Crack" (with the caps), and I don't want to know why.

@ai6yr your dealer in your contact list? 😂

ai6yr,

@swart LOL also it insists on trying to capitalize "pot" as well.

ai6yr,

@swart Android phone must be seeing me writing about "weeds", "pots", "crack", and "grow" and think I'm dealing drugs, instead of gardening 🤔

@ai6yr I think their algorithm has changed somewhat, so that it searches first through a list of proper names, and capitalizes everything it finds.

It doesn't seem to waste time looking at context.

ai6yr,

@John LOL I wonder who named their kid "Crack"
