Interesting observation about social media “fun”:

Some people think is “fun”. However, I find it anxiety-inducing and stressful. I’m not the only one who thinks so. A few autistic people say the same thing.

seems “fun” to me because I can make it be what I need it to be. For example, it’s nice that I can create antennas devoted to my special interests.

@fediversenews

samiseppo,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews section could be more vivid and versatile. By adding a couple deft options for sorting/showing recently viral/ish posts for those eagar to browse faved/boosted and yet unseen content, would decently compensate the complete lack of algos on feeds

skotchygut,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews I don’t know about itself, but I know the users of it who invade my threads and go OT are anxiety and stress inducing

arinbasu1,

… More than anxiety and stress inducing, annoying as well. I think at some point I will have to add “Bluesky” to muted word list, but I am not sure of the implications of doing that and missing nice nature photos, 🙂

janne,

@skotchygut @atomicpoet Has it even been launched yet?

skotchygut,

@janne @atomicpoet @fediversenews I wouldn’t know as I don’t use the site but somehow their users must not get enough engagement on their preferred network of choice so they come to this one with a chip on their shoulder.

pussista,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews What is it they like about that isn't available on the ?

pussista,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Are they already applying dark patterns to keep people addicted to the platform, too? I've signed up for an invite code and haven't gotten mine, yet. Would only sign up to check it out & to understand the hype.

@pussista @atomicpoet @fediversenews Really it’s that Bluesky was able to attract some big name shitposters from Twitter. So the place feels familiar and fun as a small gated community right now

@wonkothesane

Hopefully that won't persist in meaningful numbers. I'm not accusing you - I'm saying in general we as a society/community/etc. need to stop thinking about these communities in a "Win/lose" mentality.

People are seemingly wanting to cling to a "one solution fits all" mentality. I don't think that is going to happen. Both places can exist and bridge to one another.

    @wonkothesane Exactly 100%

    The best solution is to let them all federate.

    pussista,

    @wonkothesane @atomicpoet @fediversenews So they managed to replicate the same of pre- . Understood!

    ConserveChange,

    @pussista @atomicpoet @fediversenews

    I'm on both, and there seems to be a lot of ppl there who tried mastodon, didn't get past the choices/friction at sign-up, or didn't like the "you need to adapt to us" attitude they feel like they encountered when they gave masto a shot (real or perceived). I saw ppl describe masto as "too eurocentric", not friendly to communities of colour, etc.

    I think many refugees were mourning what they lost, so just wanted a direct, easy replacement.

    pussista,

    @ConserveChange @atomicpoet @fediversenews The signup really doesn't hold up unless is planning to remain a centralized service, however, the "unwelcoming" attitude to the Black community seems to be a real issue. Don't think Bluesky is the answer with its almost non-existent moderation tools, tho.

    ConserveChange,

    @pussista @atomicpoet @fediversenews

    I know its easy to roll eyes about the friction thing, but when you think about it, we're a few decades past anyone having to think about which "server" they're going to join. Even when that was a think for email, most people still just went with what they got from their ISP. Choosing a server, then choosing an app, not having a consistent experience, these are all new to the vast majority of users.

    pussista,

    @ConserveChange @atomicpoet @fediversenews Yes, all very understandable reasons, until Bluesky decentralizes like what it is marketing.

    ConserveChange,

    @pussista @atomicpoet @fediversenews Yeah I wonder about that, and what they might develop along the way to keep friction low, since they're rolling the federation out in a very controlled manner it seems.

    @ConserveChange @pussista @fediversenews Then why is Discord so popular?

    ConserveChange,

    @atomicpoet @pussista @fediversenews totally different use-case IMO. intentionally-bounded communities of practice, not intended as a "town square" where they can go to hear from Dril and Jake Tapper in the same feed.

    @ConserveChange @atomicpoet @pussista @fediversenews

    a widely used fediverse that is still decentralized will require servers based around localities, ala .

    ozzy,

    @atomicpoet @ConserveChange @pussista @fediversenews
    for discord, do people actually chose which app and which server they will join?

    jupiter_rowland,

    @Ozzy On Discord, "server" is newspeak for "chatroom".

    There are no separate Discord servers run by third-party individuals like Fediverse servers/instances. All Discord "servers" actually run on the very same central server farm owned and operated by Discord.

    I guess the reason why they chose the term "server" was to appeal to the cool TeamSpeak kids who actually do run their own servers on their own machines.

    So no, you don't get to choose which instance run by whom you join. There is only one instance, and it's run by Discord.

    ConserveChange,

    @pussista @atomicpoet @fediversenews also, following is just a single click, right from someone's post. I think the multi-step follow thing, which even for me is frustrating at times, is a much bigger drop-out-point for many newcomers

    @ConserveChange @pussista @atomicpoet @fediversenews
    It is rather strange that I can (among other things) Mute, Block or Report you or any other user I don't follow right there from the post, but I can't actually Follow you!

    cpep,
    @cpep@mstdn.science avatar

    @ConserveChange The advantage is to people who are confident they can figure it out, that is not everyone. Once you are in then you need to figure out how to subdue your ego. You need to find people and their content more interesting than your own. That takes a shift from bird site training. No more coasting on sanctioned thoughts (algorithm fuckery), now you are in charge. It is scary. I am on a very academic server and had to figure out "unlisted" to post freely & sacrifice #s - magic now.

    volkris,

    @pussista

    Bluesky’s engineering design focuses more on users than instances, giving users more control over their content and flexibility to change servers more transparently, etc.

    Fediverse involves some engineering choices that are not compatible with those features.
