The reason Trump has an edge in the polls now is because this is the new age of web-broadcast misinformation, disinformation, and especially the burgeoning power of internet-magnified lies. A secondary, reciprocal cause is the dominance of the right-wing on radio. Third--Fox News. People armed with guns but not critical thinking are swept helplessly along. Their emotions are being triggered over and over and over. We are failing to find ways to counteract the waves of charged lies.

samiseppo,

@johnshirley2024 Asymmetric where algos encourage insanely irresponsible attention whores to gather more coverage by all means. Including buying tons& tons of fake following, only to gather more coverage from algos (=gate keepers), and also make themselves seem more popular online. Bought coverage takes one on people's faces, also to stick more easily.

Insane irresponsibility uses attention for spreading explicit lies & implicit threats, bc of sheer naiivety of such platforms.

You’ve heard, of course, that the global average temperature has set a new record high numerous times during the past week. But we’re not breaking those old records by just a little bit. The Earth has a very bad fever and the temperature is soaring.

🚨 We are in a climate emergency. 🚨

samiseppo,

@breadandcircuses Blind greed causes by far the worst self-inflected problems, when instead with a more sensible, smarter and honest sight massive profits could be made sustainably.

It's utterly odd how even a sheer sign language by the world itself doesn't speak loudly enough to the greediest ones.

Elon Musk, who claimed to be a "free speech absolutist," is censoring tweets in Turkey ahead of critical elections at the request of the autocrats currently in power

samiseppo,

@juddlegum Is it so that people care their egos and gathered exposure on Tweetlandia more than something so vitally essential like democracy and real responsible free speech,

...since a concept of "absolute free speech" is only possible for autocrats within their realm of power.

After talking with @wild1145 , it seems that the reports of transphobia were back from an old post/posts which never federated the delete action properly, leading to a false sense of a lack of admin/moderation action. They're committed to moderating against transphobia, so we are re-federating with mastodonapp.uk! My sincerest apologies for jumping to conclusions over something which clearly required more investigation and outreach.

samiseppo,

@hirad @kainoa @wild1145 Micro targeted banning rather than whole instances instantly would probably be more constructive & also infiltrating saboteurism alleviating approach? 🤔

Interesting observation about social media “fun”:

Some people think is “fun”. However, I find it anxiety-inducing and stressful. I’m not the only one who thinks so. A few autistic people say the same thing.

seems “fun” to me because I can make it be what I need it to be. For example, it’s nice that I can create antennas devoted to my special interests.

@fediversenews

samiseppo,

@atomicpoet @fediversenews section could be more vivid and versatile. By adding a couple deft options for sorting/showing recently viral/ish posts for those eagar to browse faved/boosted and yet unseen content, would decently compensate the complete lack of algos on feeds

I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.

Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.

I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.

samiseppo,

@louis For other than geeks even slightly more complex choices and online concepts tend to cause frustation and headache. The less major decisions are introduced to a rookie, the better. They impatiently want to find a comfortish zone, to set up their profile and see some instant "action" and content in practise.

After some time also *non-geek *but advanced users may then also seek for further adjustments and options, which is default approach for geekier users.

I like this observation from @davew: "But as quiet as Bluesky is, it makes Mastodon look even quieter."

What makes it so odd, is that Bluesky has 50k accounts, but Mastodon has gained more than 50k accounts in past two days.

The reason makes itself look busier is simply algorithms. Should have a checkbox: "I consent to give my content to be searchable for algorithms"?

Would it be better or not? It could connect disparate communities in Mastodon.

samiseppo,

@Ciantic @davew Or the lack of algos on feeds could be compensated with a more vivid and versatile section.

samiseppo,

@atomicpoet Digital content is consumed and "rented" via ads free to streams.

The due to technological leaps is so outstandingly high already and is still growing if only humanity manages to NOT get Darwin-awarded while conducting it. 'es are going to be more and more based on artificial restriction of goods/services to adjust markets & prices.

is finally testing federation with "allow-listed servers".

They're finally taking the step of decentralization.

Many people will naysay this. But it's absolutely better that they move to decentralization than not do it.

https://blueskyweb.xyz/blog/5-5-2023-federation-architecture

samiseppo,

@atomicpoet A few thoughts from a non-technical wonderer:

Does the announced profound need of recoding imply it's going to apply and absorb AT-protocol, to federate first with and perhaps within itself too – on multiple server centers.

Who governs the AT-protocol, if it's not open-sourced (like 'ed )? Who owns it? Who's going to buy the core infra of such walled gardened ? 🤔

Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

samiseppo,

@gruber For a platform (like ) to gather wider audience.

  1. Design & hone an elegantly simple and clear UI to onboard and use by default.

  2. Emphasize basic power features (like tag-following)

  3. Advertise advantages of a decentralised system to emphasize the to own your data by (to decide of its usage; e.g. for commercial and other purposes)

  4. Not by default, but on a MENU, offer additional (and geekier) features for more advanced users to enable

@BarrenPlanet @passthejoe Hashtags could be shown more innovatively and sophisticatedly. Subtly embeddedly and less discernebly when placed as singly IN your text.

...and more prominently and colourfully when at least two tags are placed in immediate succession.

This could be enabled as default and this current and enhancedly expressive text tagging could be an option.

@danielalbu Back in the early 80's seemed enticing but not most impressive.

(launched already in 1979) seemed somewhat other wordly (when put on shown for customers to try and look at - in some radio stores) by its bold and creative use of lego graphcis trying to paint a game scenery as "photorealistic" as possible w/ those 16-bit lego pixels/colors.

MI was a kind of BETAMAX of its time by selling only 10% of what Atari did.

@stefan Variedly for all those reasons . Option 4 rarely though, and would rather bookmark.

"To get someone's attention" favoriting also raises the rank of a toot on the section (like boosts do). Some instances Explore-rank only local toots, but (I think) on larger instances federated toots are included.

samiseppo,

@stefan EXPLORE

The lack algos would make it reasonable to lengthen and widen the Explore-sortiment of boosted/favourited toots, to get "viral" toots more properly exposed.

There could be categories like:
Popular within the last:
6 hrs
24 hrs (default)
Week
Month
...

Sorting options for those could be e.g.:
🔃 By popularity (=boosts+favs)
🔃 By account name
🔃 By date/time
🔃 Random
...

Since making it possible to have hearts on my instance, it's hard to switch back to stars even though I made both look beautiful. I'm constantly switching them back and forth in my personal instance.

Stars are default in the btw.

Heart and star micro-interactions.

samiseppo,

@rolle Make either as default and have the other as an option – for a user to set. And there could be also a Thumb as an option (but dont invest your time on such trivia for now). 👍

⭐ A single STAR implies to something special and if several together- to a rating of sort.

💛 Heart implies to an affection - of course - or just positive feelings/emotions.
