Normalize virus reports like weather reports. We appreciate weather reports even if they bring us bad news, as they help us plan ahead and avoid accidents.

We need to stop being in denial about airborne viruses spreading. Sharing data helps us prepare and makes our lives easier.

arinbasu1,

Can be incorporated in weather reports much like pollen counts. Not that hard but will yield good results to keep people safe. At least in 2024, after these years of living with covid, there cannot be an excuse of not doing this work.

I know there are people who feel otherwise, but Evernote lost it for me a decade ago. Of course I don't object to paying for software, but Evernote simply wasn't worth the asking price.

Over the years I have had hundreds of left-wing people block me for sincerely asking for the facts in a situation, a situation I agree with them on... I cant recall a right-winger ever doing that (not that they dont have a ton of other issues).

As someone who has and still does lean left I have to say every day i become more and more ashamed of the way "my side" behaves... its depressing to see.

arinbasu1,

Being left of centre does not necessarily imply openness of mind.

This is an amazing epiphany, I’d love to see this vision realised. But the hard reality is that in general awareness of even the term across university campuses is abysmally low, let alone realise its potential. They have courses on promoting things on x or Facebook and everything is about LinkedIn, but the moment you mention Mastodon they look askance as if that does not exist.

Not just Muted, Blocked. Because I disagreed with them and gave a reference with disconfirming evidence. No attempt to back up their claims in any way, or persuade me.

Tells you everything you need to know about the quality of their "thinking" on the subject.

Its time to figure out a way not to read anything about X on my timeline. I usually manually delete Musk and Trump related feeds as irrelevant but things are getting to a point of irritableness. Why is being used for spreading “this day in twitter or X” kind of posts?

RT: https://mastodon.social/users/rvps2001/statuses/110912512989368270

arinbasu1,

Thanks for the good suggestion. and inded, I usually do.

But again, these are very crude filters. I understand some people and content-based businesses try to find eyeballs by posting X linked news, and some do appear as part of content resharing. My rant is that, its irritating and perhaps inappropriate to read “first hand’ Musk did this or a feature about X on a platform that some of us have adopted because we did not want to use X or similar media in the first place.

Community led, more than 200 speakers, 20,000 attendees, messy and wild like Medium. It's a rock concert for people who love reading and writing.

arinbasu1,

Unfortunately, this will be early morning 3 AM for us in the Southern Hemisphere. Perhaps a more time-zone sensitive meeting could have been thought of.

arinbasu1,

But not all sessions. I may want to attend Tony’s Keynote but that would mean I will need to attend at 4 AM in the morning. You may not have the same problem. Understand?

True. Besides, if we design a course keeping in mind the needs of the ADHDs, this will benefit everyone, like a curb cut effect and can bring about unexpected benefits.

Last night my husband asked "When do you think we'll see serious action on climate change in the US?"

We thought about it together & decided if we have a summer where it's hot & the power goes out for a week & in more than one major metro area that isn't in a generally hot region-- then... then maybe people will get it.

That's gonna kill a lot of people. But on the bright(???🙁?) side this will probably happen in the next few years.

We talked about how to make our neighborhood more ready.

arinbasu1,

We have done the same thing. And added a kitchen garden that provides us with the vegetables and legumes. Practically off-grid living.

arinbasu1,

This is a great plan and if you can please post something like a blog post for us the plebs, a lot of us will benefit by replicating this. A butterfly pollinator garden is a great project.

Any rhetoric profs or other experts out there?

I'm looking for something to cite for the proposition that what we call things/how we label things actually matters.

Are there authoritative basic treatises, articles, books I should be looking at?

Recommendations (including self-citations) most appreciated!

Well captured. That story continues. I hear you. These things are ever so difficult to formulate. For example, if you study how the ethnicities are mapped in census tracts, that’s an eye opener as to how well-meaning people mess up things.

Since this is a poster, can she not ask a colleague to present it on her behalf or does the conference not have an online component? Sadly, as much as many of us do not like to fly, academic conference organisers seem to be oblivious of the carbon costs of long distance flights and make lives of academics in the Global South difficult.

arinbasu1,

Yes, do not disagree with you on this, although as practically few scientific work these days are conducted by solo scientists, it is likely that she has collaborators who can present the work and at least the poster gets displayed in the conference that matters. Conference organisers need to create more spaces for young and ECRs to attend conferences. Most mid-career academics etc who are not presenting anything significant at a conference can stay home and pay for junior colleagues to attend them (wishful thinking!)

The way that you delete your Threads account is that you also delete your Instagram account. Quite unclear whether these two services will split or get even more integrated in the future…

https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/06/threads-delete-profile-instagram-meta/

arinbasu1,

Well, the only way I could get an access to Threads was through my Instagram (whose password etc, I long forgot it was quite an unnecessary drama to recover the password) but the moot point was I had to have an instagram account to access the so-called “Threads”. At least to me it seems that they are as integrated as twins conjoined at hips and everywhere (sigh!) …

atomicpoet, to Futurology

I just had a look at #Meta's recent press release about #Threads, and something caught my attention right away.

For the very first time, they're acknowledging another #Fediverse platform alongside #Mastodon. Specifically, they're highlighting that #WordPress can now connect through #ActivityPub.

Now, you know Meta's PR department doesn't say things by accident. So here's why this is a big deal. Last time I checked, WordPress powers a whopping 43% of the Internet. Yeah, you heard that right! If you visit a website, there's a good chance it's using WordPress as its CMS.

Now, if even a fraction of those WordPress sites start federating, it could have a huge impact on the network effect of the Fediverse. Of course, Meta isn't oblivious to this. I've been talking about the potential of WordPress and ActivityPub for quite some time now.

But if you're particularly observant, you might also notice that they mention #Tumblr. We've known for a while that Tumblr is likely to integrate ActivityPub into their platform.

But here's an interesting tidbit: Did you know that one company, Automattic, not only owns Tumblr but is also the driving force behind WordPress?

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but once again, PR departments don't just drop hints randomly. I have a strong feeling that Meta has been having some high-level discussions with Automattic about the future of ActivityPub. It wouldn't surprise me if Meta has some insights into Automattic's upcoming plans for the Fediverse.

https://about.fb.com/news/2023/07/introducing-threads-new-app-text-sharing/

@fediversenews

arinbasu1,

The rush to adopt Threads tells me that social media is all hype. Somehow hasn’t got on the treadmill. Wait till Threads gets on to ActivityPub and folks will lecture you on this as if Meta invented the concept. Coming to a browser near you Chris, :-/
