Are "hard links" important or a nice to have in a filesystem?

I'm trying to assess possible feature compromises for a / based that can be mounted on multiple machines, so any views on the usefulness of hard links with examples would be appreciated.

One such compromise here is merging of changes made from different devices, that will be much harder with hard linking.

How important are hard links to you and why?

@happyborg
which decentralized p2p filesystem is it?
a hypothetical one?

@serapath I was looking at options for building a filesystem and APIs for but decided to shelve that for now and am working on another demo app for it.

@happyborg have you ever heard of hyperdrive or dat?
same thing, different name.

it is a p2p filesystem implemented in javascript.
development started in 2013. it is quite impressive

@serapath similar but far from the same. There are no systems that attempt what Autonomi does.

If this area interests you or you believe that we need to reinvent the web in order to defeat centralisation, enclosure, surveillance and censorship, ask why other systems have not been variable of doing so and then take a look at Autonomi's approach to those deficiencies.

@happyborg

yes, i do believe we need to reinvent the web in order to defeat centralisation, enclosure, surveillance and censorship.
we need to move post web.
i do have plenty of ideas how to get there.
none of it involves servers or clouds. all just p2p.
...but not just the tech stack, also how we work as programmers (early adopters) and other professions as well. no more github/gitlab/git...you name it. no more npm, no more any hosted infrastructure.

@happyborg

do tou have some more to read or preferably even can you pitch/summarize autonomi in some toots? 😀

@serapath see the white paper linked at https://autonomi.com and if you scroll to the bottom I think you'll find a summary table comparing many similar projects with Autonomi.

Filecoin is a market for IPFS so you can treat that column as in part representative of both.

Let me know if you have questions arising from that.

@serapath@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@happyborg oh, a rebranding of safe network?

alroght. i know that.
are there any apps out there that use it... maybe a video conferencing or messenger app?
or a audio broadcasting app?

do you have a browser that integrates the protocol? desktop? mobile?

anything where the capabilities can be experienced?

@serapath rn we only have a CLI which you can try with a public testnet (or a local testnet if you compile from source, which isn't as hard as you may expect).

That allows file upload and download, plus sending tokens, and if you run a node, earning tokens.

Other apps are coming but there are no details.

I'm working on a demo app myself, and APIs for others to use.

@serapath I agree with all of that as goals, but also recognise that we should use whatever systems get us there - and able to serve as many others as possible, as soon as possible - not just nerds and Devs etc.

I built a proof of concept for a decentralised GitHub for use on Autonomi a couple of years ago, and before that showed how to use existing Solid apps with Autonomi as a p2p backend for TimBL's Solid.

So I believe we're on the same page! 😃
