users! I'm curious how many of us are using "modern", "enhanced", "reimagined" versions of classic command-line tools. Think bat instead of cat, rg instead of grep, exa instead of ls.

If you don't use them, why? Is the installation overhead too much, e.g. because you're using a lot of machines? Does your brain need to stay compatible with the standard tools for some reason?

Feel free to write a reply, the poll can't possibly cover everything :)

@scy Classic tools only. I know the modern rewrites exist. I used some of them. But the classic tools are in my muscle memory. Probably I should create some aliases, so that I use them more frequently.

@scy
I keep forgetting about them and therefore only use some of them some of the time..

@scy Classic only - too much „not my machine“ and 30 years of muscle memory.

@scy I install them, planning to use them. But I usually just forget they exist.

@scy 20 years of muscle memory are hard to overcome. That and why bother when support is inconsistent across systems

@scy I tend to rely on classic tools because that’s something that is always available and my brain isn’t big enough to know 2 sets of tools

@scy classic tools only.

the new ones are super pretty, but I'm basically never working on my local machine, always only on remote boxes and I really don't want to (or cannot legally) install all the nice stuff there (for bloat, security and compliance reasons) :/

@scy The classic tools are usually always immediately available and can be used universally on any machine. I don't have to learn any new syntax/flags and can usually get to grips with the systems straight away without having to set up my environment first.

@scy nix has given me the ability to write and use nushell scripts on all of my machines

would i use them in production? ehh, definitely not nushell. age and yq, probably, fd too probably, but i think that’s my line 🦋
