ArcaneSlime,

All these answers are good but for the real answer: because reddit did a thing where they had "X"porn around like, idk, '07 ish. Earthporn, spaceporn, unixporn, etc. It’s just (supposed to be anyway) very pretty pictures of pretty things related to the topic, like for instance a scenic waterfall for earthporn, some cool nebula with a bunch of colors added in for spaceporn, and a sick i3 rice for unixporn.

Also never understood why it’s called “rice” instead of a “theme”. Every DE uses the term “theme” but /unixporn uses the term “rice” for some reason.

Badabinski,

The only thing that comes to me is that someone who was really into tuning/spiffing up Japanese cars was involved in the community early on. I've always found it weird, and I'd honestly kinda prefer to just use "theme" or "spiff" or one of the many other words that the Godfucked curse of the Earth that is the English language provides for the purpose.

match,
@match@pawb.social avatar

why not throw in just a teensy bit of racism in your vocabulary :9

xor,

I’m don’t understand, what are you referring to?

match,
@match@pawb.social avatar

The etymology of riceing in cars is pretty directly racist

Badabinski,

Yeah, that's why I wish the community would just use a different term. I'm not a fan of where it came from (Asian people bad asian motorcycle bad), and the arguments where one person says "I've been saying it for years," versus "bro it's been fucking racist for years," have gone past the point of a beaten and dead horse and into the realm of a fine mist of blood, fat, muscle, and viscera. Like, I just don't understand why people are attached to it, it's such a weird hill to die on. If it's a matter of having a term that people outside of the community wouldn't immediately understand, then I'm sure a different word could be found.

Edit: christ, I was not familiar with its usage in the 1930s. What a mess... Also, really loving the section on its Korean war usage, that's just great. Thanks for the link, it reaffirms my desire for the community to just use a different goddamned word.

Hapbt,

@Badabinski @beta_tester @const_void @match @xor need a slightly racist term for white men with giant jacked-up dualie extended-box-everything trucks like, corned-out or racist-rocket or something

lolcatnip,

Ooops,
Ooops avatar

I just don't understand why people are attached to it

Because words aren't racist, people and opinions and sentiments expressed by them are.

When the term ricing is used for so long and 95%+ of people don't know where it came from and have zero negative connotations associated with it, your argument (from their perspective) sounds like this:

"Don't use the term, by its obscure origin you didin't even know about it is racist"

"I've been saying it for years without any racism intended nor perceived"

"bro it's been you are being a fucking racist for years"

And then you are surprised by the negative reaction...

Badabinski,

I think my initial read of your comment was wrong (I thought you were saying that the term was fine, which didn't hold up on my second read where I was paying attention), so I want to clarify by saying what I think you mean. You're making the point that I should be saying that the statement is racist and that they should consider whether or not they want to use it, not that they are being racist by using it in ignorance.

Is that right? Because if so, that's a fair point. More flies with honey than vinegar and all that. I'm normally better about giving people a chance to consider rather than just dictate my beliefs, but I'm sleep deprived and cranky and I think it's making me act in ways that aren't aligned with my usual values.

Edit: and it's a sign that I need to get off of the Internet for now, since I'm being waaaay more negative than I want to be.

Ooops,
Ooops avatar

Basically yes. Or: the term is fine; in the eyes of people who never heard or thought about its racist origin.

And your were entirely on the right track when your first comment started with explaining the origin first. When that's your starting point and you then get the response "But I've been saying it for years", it's probably far more successful to go with "Yes, but it can be offensive for people knowing its origin, so why not use available alternative terms?" than with "bro it's been fucking racist for years". In one case people have a high chance on thinking about it, in the other they will instictively feel attacked and get defensive about it.

Ricing vehicles (mostly cars) used to be a big thing, enough so that when “rice” first started being used it was a common term to even people not into the hobby. I think it’s a… not skeumorphism, but whatever the tern is for anachronisms like “files” and “folders.” Metaphors carried over from the before-times.

Unlike “disks” which is a term that used to refer to a specific thing that’s largely been replaced by rectangular solid state devices. I feel as if there are, or should be, terms for these language elements.

lolcatnip,

Anachronism?

sxan, (edited )
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Close enough, I suppose. I feel as if there’s another term, tho; someching specific to speech. Like, I’ve hearg it before, but can’t recall it.

I tried to minor in linguistics in college, before I realized it wasn’t quite what I thought it was. I may have heard a term there. Now I have to go check if there’s a c/linguistics somewhere.

Edit: !linguistics

GearToward,

I think because the term of modifying japanese cars are called Rice

callyral,
@callyral@pawb.social avatar

i prefer to call them themes, it’s more descriptive. i usually call them rices ironically. i guess use whichever term you prefer idk

finestnothing,

Ricing came from the term rice-rocket from Japanese car enthusiasts which referred to the mods for their cars (physical mods, paint, stickers, etc). Transformed into rice/ricing eventually just because terms tend to shorten, and eventually jumped to other circles.

I usually think of a theme as a widely distributed/standardized set of appearances that anyone can load and use while a rice is customized and unique to that person

BolexForSoup,
BolexForSoup avatar

Is the term considered racist? It feels kind of racist, but I am unfamiliar with it lol

Badabinski,

It's uh, very racist. I didn't know just how bad it was until today, but this Wikipedia article posted elsewhere in this thread does a good job of breaking down how fucked up it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_burner

The people using the term nowadays probably don't know, but they should learn. It's pretty bad.

Basically people will call really visually pleasing things within a hobby porn. Like on some places online you can find food porn, which is simply really delicious looking food that’s nicely presented( Yes it’s kinda an edgy joke to call it porn).

But it’s not made to be sexual and no one except maybe 0000000000.1% of people( I don’t want to think about it) probably get turned on by it.

Anyway back to riceing DWM and st.

It’s a joke, but when exposing a number the number of left digits transmit the confidence you have in your number. 0.1 tells you that the “real” number is 0.1a, where 0 <= a < 5. 0.10000000000 is giving you a lot more information than 0.1

AVincentInSpace,

BSD is Unix

fl42v,

Unix is like franchising: you can be perfectly SUS, yet no money = not Unix

neidu2,

Depends on what you mean by BSD.

If you mean literally BSD, then yes, it’s a direct UNIX decendant based on the same source tree. However, it’s been discontinued 30 years ago.

If you mean one of the *BSDs (Freebsd, netbsd, openbsd), then the relationship is more similar to that of linux, although there is still actual BSD code involved.
