Some folks on mastodon delete posts after a period, sometimes for privacy sometimes to save server space.

Is there a nice way to download a thread/archive it?

I don’t want to distribute them, I think there’s two cases:

1 I like having an archive of stuff I’ve said so I can look at it years later.
2 people have good advice/essays and I’d like to read them in the future.

koftwentytwo,

@james Create you own instance and take what you want from the databases.

    @Tim_Eagon oh yeah I need to try that too I haven’t yet either.

    Hmm I assume for my replies it just shows my messages and not someone else’s but I guess I should try and confirm!
    Wouldn’t work for random threads I’m not in like when an RPG person goes on an interesting ramble about something in depth

    @Tim_Eagon @james Yeah. I set my posts to auto-delete after a week unless they meet certain thresholds, and I manually delete most of my posts within a day ... because I want them to be gone.

    If I knew anyone was harvesting them, that would be upsetting.

    @SJohnRoss @Tim_Eagon that’s a very fair concern.
    I think knowing if it’s possible is important for that!

    I haven’t done anything like that and tbh probably won’t.

    I just realized an advice thread I wanted to think about in more depth later could disappear and wondered what the possibilities were.

    I suspect it’s technically possible, it’s more of a question if someone has made it easy already or not.

    @Tim_Eagon Yeah I presume it’s technically feasible.

    Thinking of the privacy side I wonder (hypothetically I don’t have enough interest or time to write something) if any of those deletion settings are publicly visible so you could exclude people.

    I was more thinking about the “this is basically just a blog post” type threads from the bird site.

    If such a tool existed it would certainly be double edged!
