mburr,

How do I run a simple, comprehensible instance? I'm not crazy about setting up and installing the usual server. I have simple needs and want to experiment with my own instance.

It would be great if such were written in . But I can hold my nose and use a different modern compiled language.

I do know how to search the web. I do! But it's easy accidentally to waste time on something hopeless.

I'll happily be the only user and tolerate jankiness.

@mburr @smallcircles Written in C, @grunfink's is is a small server

@mburr does it has to be mastodon? @gotosocial works pretty well and its installation is very easy. But it's writed in Go not Rust.

philippe,

@mburr you are looking for an activitypub compatible server. Activitypub being the standard used by Mastodon. If you want complete mastodon experience I think currently mastodon is the best option. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

mburr,

@philippe Yeah, I was pretty confused in my excitement. Ignorance.

Given that is mostly I'm willing to figure it all out and turn the lights on bit by bit. It amounts to compile time, which, meh.

Hopefully I'm not leaving anything out by thinking lemmy instead of . I think I grok now that mastadon an implementation that is next to lemmy more or less; another "server" with a UI (and maybe other things? 🤔)

mburr,

@philippe

...like I'm asking my next door neighbor "are you on the internet explorer?"

tyil,

@mburr First learn it's not , but the . Then you can learn that there's , , and many other projects that let you interact with the Fediverse!

If you want simplicity, I'd recommend or .

@mburr there are sites that will host Mastodon for you for a reasonably low monthly cost. Or you could pay for a cheap VPS and install it yourself. I thought there was a site listing the mastodon hosting sites but I can’t find it.

mburr,

@YurkshireLad Thanks. That's probably a step between, which is good to have around. I was wanting to set up, run, host, all that. I'd maybe also consider aws which is probably "turn-key" at this point.

I was looking forward to running my own node just for the thrill of it, but not go crazy until I understand. babysteps.

looks like it's just about exactly what I wanted. Still... probably not until I have my bearings.

Wrapping my head around stuff (which is really the goal for me.)

@mburr another option is to buy a shared VPS for a few bucks a month and install https://www.cloudron.io/index.html. Cloudron takes care of installing apps for you, and it offers support for Mastodon. You can install two apps for free otherwise it's $15/mo.

@mburr these guys offer managed Mastodon hosting - https://masto.host/pricing/. I don't use them so do your own research.

mburr,

Maybe I should think more . This does not look like abandonware https://crates.io/crates/activitypub_federation

The vocabulary is hard to grasp partly because it's all "federated" and "de facto".

I don't think I've really gotten anything out of any of the 9000 "what's a good" posts I've made over my life.

And yet I persist.

Hi! 👋

mburr,

Haha. Well is written in . I guess you can accuse me of not doing any research. (but still!)

@mburr yes, I was about to mention that.

I maintain 3 fedi-related lists at https://delightful.club where there's more + projects.

(I have a bit of a backlog of additional entries to add soon hopefully)

mburr,

Thank you thread. [How do notifications work here? Ding!]

Big success with ! server runs. plumbed up. Runs. No complaints.

I'm doing all this on for reasons.

Got started on --> Sudden ! The solutions have nothing to do with Lemmy.

If I'm resourceful, determined and patient, in what other ways might I interact or communicate with lemmy_server?

Like an iPhone app? Or a script? I already have a vpn to the host system.

mburr,

OOokay. Yeah. Again, coulda looked a bit. I guess I assumed the webui is everywhere because there's nothing else.

You may take it as a sign of excitement.

mburr,

After I realized I'm wasting people's time, I found and tried which is awesome in a few ways. I love that it's just a binary (also).

But definitely still finding new problems. I'd consider alternatives.

@mburr That’s a bit eye-opening. I mean isn’t there an expectation that rust tools be somewhat reliable? Lemmy is buggy as hell. Though suppose it’s the javascript web client where the bulk of the bugs are.

mburr,

@deflarerOfClouds Not sure what you mean. Rust tooling and output is famously top notch, which has been my experience too. I'm a fan.

I don't doubt lemmy is buggy. I've got it running with no problems, but attaching a UI has been a huge ordeal because I refuse to "just use docker". Lemmy is a tiny binary that just works when all the drama's over, but the UI is yet another nodemare. looks promising but it's kinda broken/stalled.

I'm taking a mental health break from it for now ;-)
