Hey Mastodon, what's a free hosting plan for a server-side Web app + DB you'd recommend? Should I pursue with good old #php and #mysql or is there something more modern? I have a small doodling idea for this three days week-end and maybe I should also learn a new language?
@bertrand I wouldn't say #php is not modern; the language changes starting in 7.2 and forward have positioned it well, particularly regarding the type system improvements.
As for free hosting... I tend to stay away from it. If a security issue occurs, free means you're most likely vulnerable. DO droplets are pretty affordable.
@mwop not saying it's not modern, sorry if it came across as that. It's just that I learned #php 24 years ago and still use the same constructs as I did back then, never switched to object oriented for instance... I'm the one who's not modern 😅
@bertrand@mwop You really should take some time to learn modern PHP. There are so many great features - even without the OOP parts. If you did learn OOP in PhP, you’d be able to use frameworks like Laravel, Laminas, and Symfony.
@bertrand if the PHP is the thing you know the best, then get the latest stable version of it and start doing the work you want to do In case you do something that's outdated, it will let you know and you will learn something new. Rinse and repeat :)
