The UK is a useful idiot for authoritarian regimes.

The Online Safety Bill is set to puncture the security of messaging apps to enable mass surveillance. It’ll give permission for it to be done in other countries.

World-leading stuff 🇬🇧

The thing is will make children less safe. So those pushing must want mass surveillance more than Child Safety.

We should all be concerned, very concerned about this. 🇬🇧🌐

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith Meanwhile, always remember that everything you send by encrypted systems is being stored for future decryption when quantum machines come of age.

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith It's really important to watch the full version of this. The sad thing, however, is that only once (and only at the very end) does "client-side scanning" even get mentioned. If one of the three had actually explained what that means, this would have been a clearer conversation accessible to a wider audience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E--bVV_eQR0

mariubrlu,

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith Why do they call it Online Safety Bill ? That's completely opposite to safety. I think they want to say Online Spyware Bill.

Herefordrob,

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith As a person born in the UK, I can say the headline seems true.

grantf,
yma,

@openrightsgroup Whenever the UK government talks about “child safety”, you can bet your tits you’re looking at their latest attempt to implement mass surveillance. They’re that cynical.

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith @nicklockwood In fairness, the UK is the only place I’ve ever been to where there is enthusiastic support for 24/365 video surveillance by the police.

heckler,

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith this has been very long in the making

munir,

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith The UK gets worse day by day :awesome:

lemonflavoured,

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith Well, more the UK is a proto-authoritarian regime. And has been since the middle of the Blair government at least.

Wow - I watched that programme. What a wonderful sharp woman making an even sharper contrast with the politician trying to emoliantly sell the bill and ignoring the technical issues.

If only they could swap places so we had really intelligent and knowledgeable people setting policy. But that, these days, is not the Tory way.

PabloMartini,

@openrightsgroup @Mer__edith back to PGP? It'll really piss them off if we all do it!
