Saw a post on here yesterday that massively clarified how to view Mastodon in a way that I kinda wish someone had pointed out back when I first joined.

When you invite someone to join Mastodon, invite them to join your server, to interact with the good people there. From that server, they can then interact with other people.

I (and presumably many, many others) saw it ass-backwards at the start, by having to pick a random server to be able to access the wider Mastodon service.

@DJDarren yeah, you gotta focus on the community on the servers themselves when advocating. Sure there's tons of interesting people out there, but if you choose a server relevant to your interests you start out with easy access to like minded folks.

boscoandpeck,

@DJDarren I am guilty of this. Been thinking that I need to change instances but haven't gotten around to it. I think I am building up how complicated it will be to change to a new server 😕 but change scares me

crazydutchy,

@DJDarren There is no requirement to do that either, plenty servers, but at least this way it fits with other stuff for my radio show.

crazydutchy,

@DJDarren Yeah, I can imagine at first it's a little confusing, where to start. There are resources out there, but that really started helping me when I already was on a server. Now in the first few hours Tweesecake supported Mastodon and I decided to try it out, the only server you could join was mastodon.social, so I ended up there. They fixed that really quickly, but well, i was already where I was. Much later when I knew more, I set up my own server.

SirBecas,

@DJDarren this is a good take. I kinda feel like Mastodon is a good blend of Reddit and Twitter, and because of that, a great platform for what I want (i.e., chill and fast interactions, like we have in the Bird App but focused on certain subjects, like what Reddit offers). I really like this sense of community with the POSSIBILITY (and not as forced as I feel it is on the Bird app) of branching out to more people I don't know/don't identify with.
