ai6yr,

Signs of (from the ). FAST diagnosis:
F—Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T—Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

@ai6yr for those of us in EMS we are being taught a new mnemonic: BEFAST

MsMerope,
@MsMerope@sfba.social avatar

@ai6yr balance and vision were added because stories can happen in different parts of the body resulting in different symptoms. And those, for example brain stem stroke patients were being misdiagnosed or were not getting to treatment quickly enough. The faster an ischemic stroke (blood clot in the brain) is treated the better the outcome

ai6yr,

@MsMerope These are all handy!

@ai6yr NAEMT offers some great [free] webinars for its members. That was from one [or two] of them.

ai6yr,

"If your stroke symptoms go away after a few minutes, you may have had a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also sometimes called a “mini-stroke.” Although brief, a TIA is a sign of a serious condition that will not go away without medical help.

Unfortunately, because TIAs clear up, many people ignore them. But paying attention to a TIA can save your life. If you think you or someone you know has had a TIA, tell a health care team about the symptoms right away." (per CDC)

@ai6yr Yup. Often early sign of impending stroke. Happened to pops who refused the ambulance and was confused as to why it was called. Brother took him to hospital anyways. He ended up with a triple bypass and a stroke.

ai6yr,

@deewani Yikes! Glad your brother caught him before things got worse!

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Yeah I insisted. I could tell from what my cousin witnessed that it was a TIA. He is relatively lucky, can walk with a cane now after 2 years, speech aphasia relatively mild, etc. This is why I continue to mask. :)

ai6yr,

@deewani Yeah, stroke, cardiac events are quite high now... I have no evidence but my son (the paramedic) is seeing a lot of that nowadays, and I am convinced it is a lot of that blood clotting weirdness with COVID showing up months later.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Yeah it is a systemic vascular clotting disease, not a respiratory disease IMHO. That is it’s route into the body but even there the symptoms are caused by clotting in the lungs. Sadly many who care for the patients do not realize this and never make a connection between “new issues” and previous infection.

@deewani @ai6yr Early on (2020?), doctors noticed unusual clotting in patients with COVID-19. The most common place to see the clots were in the lungs, but lungs not the only organ affected. Think of the associated Covid-toes and general organ failures.

@EugestShirley @ai6yr Yes. I have been following the studies. :) My opinion is based on reading the science. It is so sad that majority of folks do not understand this. At risk parents stopped masking too. So it is a matter of time now before we are no longer Novids….

@deewani @ai6yr
Sorry to hear that.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@EugestShirley @ai6yr Thanks. At least they are up on their boosters which are probably waning as we speak. I will continue to mask, ventilate, run air purifiers, etc. They won’t get it from me. Tsunami of disability incoming, diabetes, etc. I also fear for longer term effects. So many cancers initiated by viral damage. I just hope the good people keep working on the variant-proof pan-sarbecovirus vaccines. :)

@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@EugestShirley @ai6yr Hopefully this yields something better so eventually covid & long covid will be a thing of the past; or at least treatable. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2307867

ai6yr,

@deewani @EugestShirley I'm the only one in the family who masks anymore, although I am fine with outdoors (some risk, but less). I also just don't enjoy getting any kind of bug from anyone, really. That said, since no one is masking (and my son, a first responder, drags through the germ pool every day), I do have higher exposure.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr @EugestShirley We are in same boat then. Yeah outdoors is fine for me too if not overcrowded. The only thing I really miss is sneaking my own snacks into a movie lol. I still go to the movies but usually early morning matinees, usually only a few folks in those shows. Needless to say I don’t eat or drink in there. There are valved sip masks now though….

KT,

@ai6yr whelp. he’ll probably die soon.

Imma make myself one of those microwave mug cupcakes.

what were we talking about again?

    McConnell probably isn't even aware that his boy Tuberville is harming our national security.

    I wish our media would ask him every chance they get why he refuses to remove Tuberville from his committee assignment that is harming our military so badly.

    @ai6yr he had his left hand tucked into his pocket when he came back, too.
