Nice article about AI, "The reality is that no one at the beginning of the printing press had any real idea of the changes it would bring. No one at the beginning of the fossil fuel era had much of an idea of the changes it would bring."

@ErikJonker Hmm, this seems to be yet another article mythologizing tech? No one can predict the future. Neither the optimists nor the pessimists. 😀 Therefore, I think we should focus on addressing problems and risks that exist today first and take it from there. That means implementing sensible regulation asap, doing research to create a better understanding etc.

@Jigsaw_You ... that's in line with the article i think 🤔 , it's not about mythologizing but about unpredictability, both for optimists and pessimists, but also about the fiction of being able to control events in this space, although we should do what we can

@ErikJonker I think there is less “unpredictability” then we think. 😄 Algorithms are already a mayor part of our everyday lives. And we have already have enough examples of algorithms going terribly wrong. See e.g. the discriminatory algorithm used by the Dutch tax authorities. These algorithms are less complex then -based algorithms. To me it makes more sense fixing the issues we have now first and creating a good basis for further reliance on more complex algorithms.

@Jigsaw_You ... I know some things about algorithms in dutch government, i agree we should work on that, at the same time it would be a mistake to ignore "the rise of the LLMs" which an enormous amount of users and high impact also, maybe even higher if you look at numbers and potential damage/misuse

@ErikJonker I am also wondering if we already have an “enormous amount of users” and “high impact”? I think a lot of people are just giving it a try at the moment. Looking at myself. I am an experienced programmer and experimented a bit with -based code-generation solutions. But, personally, I find these solutions still too unreliable and I am not experiencing a huge boost in efficiency. Perhaps this is different for other users? And ofcourse future solutions might be better.

@Jigsaw_You
I read a lot of other experiences, especially programmers/coding where the productivity gain is real but experiences can differ ofcourse

@ErikJonker Do you have a good reference? Really curious what other experienced programmers are saying.

@Jigsaw_You ..and for amateurs like me, it's great , i can make code i could never make before or it saves a lot of time. Especially for simple questions like "write a function in python that does X using libraries Y,Z" , not always without faults but good enough most of the times

Jigsaw_You,
@Jigsaw_You@mastodon.nl avatar

@ErikJonker That is also what I hear from other programmers. Dev-teams use it to let their juniors play around and learn.

@Jigsaw_You ...and in that light, it's also great in explaining code

@ErikJonker In practice this means more strict adherence to safety rules and regulations. Less cowboy mentality and more common sense… 😉
