Which best describes you? This isn't just about online, but also at work, school, etc.

  1. I'm left or left leaning and feel I can express my politics openly in most circumstances.

  2. I'm left or left leaning but sometimes feel the need to "soften" my views from fear of angering others.

  3. I'm right or right leaning and feel I can express my politics openly in most circumstances.

  4. I'm right or right leaning but sometimes feel the need to "soften" my views from fear of angering others.

@futurebird where I am, 100% of everyone I run into is hard right. And I don't live on the southern border of the US either, just a fairly rural area. Makes it tougher when most of my political opinions come from things I've legit thought seriously about and hard data, not just "I'll Join This Team, haven't really thought about it but these cliches sound good, and they seem really into it"

@futurebird online? super open. almost 100% i would say. i keep some things under my hat cause i'm maybe a bit farther left than some (and also there are laws about what you can say online) but beyond that pretty open.

in meatspace i'm… fairly open. i make it no secret that i'm on the left, at least. but i tone things back a bit for safety's sake

@futurebird

When I worked for other people more I was not as publicly open about politics because I didn't want to be seen speaking for them.

But I also saw many people, some well known public figures, on twitter who spoke out and realized I wanted to be more like them. I appreciate people like Morgan Fairchild who speak out using their real names.

@futurebird I said No. 1, but please understand, that I often don’t go too far into it because, quite often, the people I’m talking with literally do not have the education/experience to understand the subject.

That’s not about being smart enough, it’s about not having a framework to contextualize the information. It’s a version of the Overton window.

Chigaze,
@Chigaze@mstdn.ca avatar

@futurebird I work for a union so it’d be a little difficult not to be openly left. :)

RubyGloomIRL,

@futurebird while I answered 2, I’m getting to the point that I’m becoming more open. I’m self employed, operating a service business in a very Rightwing state, and I know for a fact I’ve lost clients because of things I’ve said/stickers placed in visible areas. I’ve just gotten to the point I don’t care about losing those clients anymore.

@futurebird I'm left but I don't really vibe with the "all billionaires should be publicly executed" talk, even if they absolutely do deserve what's coming to them—unfortunately a lot of people don't think that way so I've often found myself having to shut up around other leftists. I even left an entire site over this kind of needless friction

iagondiscord,
@iagondiscord@wetdry.world avatar

@futurebird This poll is not very helpful as it doesn't ask why respondents are open or not. Also, there are very few right-wingers on this part of the Fediverse anyway, so asking for their responses is unproductive.

Number two, and you quoted it perfectly. People do not respect opinions or beliefs anymore. Unless it is their own.

@futurebird @evan ✅ I reject today’s “” and “” political tribes as they suffer from the same fundamental errors in : they accept the futility of and the of .

As an , I am politically a radical for and feel no qualms about expressing that.

I do, however, choose my battles at work, online, and elsewhere.

@futurebird @evan Yay, my reply earned a flouncing entry on some random stranger’s blocklist! Thanks for saving me time! https://troet.cafe/@birne/110883960053133056

carnahan,

@futurebird I'm saying #1 but there is a lot of range here. I openly debate someone who has what I think of as a conservative position, let's say on austerity, but I won't talk to a climate change denier or a Trump die-hard. They don't have any ground to defend.

Last exchange with a MAGA ended with "Trump is the best POTUS ever." Ever. Better than JFK, Washington, Lincoln, all of them. How can I reply? This dude does not believe it anyway, he is just excited to hear himself saying it.

    @futurebird None of the above. Squarely in the center, so I have something in common with just about everyone.

    I have questions about certain issues, but don't dare voice them because I know for certain it won't go well, and I have views that I don't bother with voicing because few, if any, will listen

    @futurebird Left and not always open. I live in a conservative small town; there are Trump flags all over the goddamn place. I keep my politics to myself just so I don't get bricks through my window.

    @futurebird Enjoy arguing, so don't mind being open. Less 'softening' and more 'don't discuss if I need to focus on work or conserve spoons'.

    cadenceoflife,

    @futurebird I generally have to hide many of my views from my family because they are very opposite and for all the wrong reasons.

    Voted 2. Always felt being a leftist but finding increasingly more common to avoid discussing politics or softening my views as I find myself disagreeing on much of modern leftists views. I do not have the energy anymore to argue on social media in general, so I scroll on more than a decade ago.
    I would have voted centre-left, if I could.

    @futurebird I grew up in a pretty conservative environment but as I've gotten older have become a pretty fierce lefty. When I'm with family or anyone from that era of life I mostly keep my thoughts to myself unless things get really egregious

    @futurebird It’s complicated. Generally I can.
    It’s a bag of unearned privilege, luck, more privilege, more luck, and a dash of extra luck of being me the way I am.

    At home (country of origin) hell yeah I express myself as I wish.

    @futurebird I do consider myself I guess on the left, although I don't really believe in the left-right spectrum. Personally, I'm just one of those types of people who are inclined to keeping my political beliefs to myself. If I do put them out there, I keep it to a minimum since I just don't like arguments relating to politics much.
