Is it time for hashtags to evolve?

Well, they're about to on Mastodon due to an upcoming change in v4.2.0, advanced by @Gargron himself.

I have some thoughts.

To refer with one "group-hashtag" multiple spellings/languages (e.g. Schweiz, Suisse, Svizzera, Svizra, Switzerland).

@chrismessina @Gargron while I love your writeup (great crash course in product design!) I do think this is the iterative process working as intended. Discourse & @codinghorror rolls out feature in a fairly similar manner:

@Gargron @codinghorror @erlend "the squeaky wheel gets the grease"! Well, consider me speaking up on behalf of the axle!

    @osma you mean in the "Add or edit topics" feature? It's similar, but seems quite secondary to composing content, whereas LinkedIn proposes them inline, where the audience will see them prominently.

    Medium also doesn't link inline hashtags in the body of articles.

    @osma Yeah, I'd agree with that, although again, Day One provides an alternative example (though also supports some Markdown syntax).

    @osma this is good to know. I was unaware of that issue!

    isaiah,

    @chrismessina tiny typo: “leave hashtag creation along”

    i think you mean “alone”?

    @isaiah Fixed! Thank you!

    @feld @Gargron Perhaps! Worth an exploration — including how such a feature could be abused or lead to broken conversation context!

    @feld By "using it right now", do you mean you're able to stay in the same thread w/ me w/o mentioning my username? If so, that makes sense — since Twitter had the concept of "in-reply-to" threading that allowed posts to... be in reply to another thread, and it wasn't necessary to mention the OP.

    @feld @chrismessina remember that you're not alone on the network.

    Gargron,

    @chrismessina No, that change cannot be tested in beta 1, it's not merged. The person you're citing is completely misguided, the change has nothing to do with what they're observing -- in fact, the change would fix their problem, as tags authored in non-Mastodon software that are not included in the body of the post would become visible for the first time. My change would also not remove a hashtag from the end of a paragraph. Only if you put it on its own line.

    chrismessina,
    @chrismessina@mastodon.xyz avatar

    @Gargron I think the person I'm citing is myself?

    Will clarify re beta 1.

    Do you have a set of tests I can look at to better understand the behavior you've designed? I was relying on the screenshots in the Github issue.

    Also, I was unaware of this: "as tags authored in non-Mastodon software that are not included in the body of the post would become visible for the first time"; are you saying that ActivityPub already supports non-inline tags on posts?

    Gargron,
    @Gargron@mastodon.social avatar

    @chrismessina No, Vince Aggrippino. It's simple, if the end of the post is just hashtags, beginning with a newline, they are not rendered in the body. Yes, it does.

    chrismessina,
    @chrismessina@mastodon.xyz avatar

    @Gargron Got it. That does nullify one of my critiques. Glad to hear it.

    I maintain that the behavior introduced with this change should be optional and opt-in by default, and that additional capabilities for hashtags and adding metadata should be explored, as the rest of my post suggests.

    I will update my post within 48 hours to clarify.

    chrismessina,
    @chrismessina@mastodon.xyz avatar

    @Gargron To close the loop: I've updated the piece in several places to improve its accuracy.

    zayathejew,

    @chrismessina @Gargron

    Been following this exchange and, I'm thinking this might be a good place to make a related remark about UX in general, namely to add my voice to those who say that if the / crowd would like to see much faster uptake, then a simple, intuitive, low-friction, mainstream-like onboarding experience and overall UX are necessary. No idea how development of that would be resourced, but that's what's needed.

    zayathejew,

    @chrismessina @Gargron On the other hand, maybe people don't want a massive influx of tens of millions of normies. The demographic here at the moment seems pretty selective for - compared to the general public - a high level of education and thoughtfulness, and that's a nice thing.

    But it will never give me what Twitter gave me pre-Musk, namely an extremely good feed of what was happening in the world and what the important things were that the media were talking about.

    chrismessina,
    @chrismessina@mastodon.xyz avatar

    @Gargron @zayathejew indeed, the global feed of "what's happening in the world, right now" seems to not be the job Mastodon is targeting, not what people are asking of it.

    Do see the comments in my post about "Mastodon neighborhoods" benefitting from local instance first hashtags in my post.

    zayathejew,

    @chrismessina @Gargron

    Yeah... I had been hoping that might become that "what's happening in the world right now" thing and maybe it will but at the moment I'm blocked from using it (EU).

    Have read your remarks about local. That would be cool too; Twitter still serves that purpose for me but I'm not sure for how long and I wish I didn't have to use it.

    chrismessina,
    @chrismessina@mastodon.xyz avatar

    @Gargron @zayathejew I decided to leave Twitter (and my 100K+ followers) because I couldn't stay. I needed to demonstrate that leaving was indeed possible and the only way the fediverse is going to replace Twitter is for more people like us to do so.

    zayathejew,

    @chrismessina

    Great blog post. I would like to leave Twitter but I'm a nobody and nothing will change if I leave, and as long as most of the somebodies stay there, I feel I have to keep going back there to see what's going on.

    Anyway, delayed reply here because I also wanted to post something about the blue checks - here is is.
