@shantini Quite true in general. At work, we have 1 US Latino , 1 from India, 2 from Asia, 1 US Asian, 1 from Russia and 1 from Spain. So it’s not like we keep the gates closed or anything. I’d be delighted to have women on the team… but none have applied! We’re in Palo Alto. Any women iOS engineers looking for an awesome, growing diverse team? Send me a DM!
@shantini One thing I learned that shocked me is that even gay men can be among the top misogynists. I truly don’t understand this. Growing up in the closet and having to put on masculine airs to avoid questions, you’d think at least gay men in my generation would empathize with and avoid such behavior toward women. It’s disappointing.
@joshua@shantini There's are a distressing number of successful women who are not that but are entirely dismissive of other women's abilities, in a way that destroys a lot of younger women's professional careers. It is absolutely astonishing to me.
@shantini@steve@joshua oh my god yes and it is so bad in professional spaces! I’ve been shocked at how many women especially at earlier stages in their careers would actively try to shoot me down and harm me and keep me out of their spaces
It took a while to find women in my field who I could trust and get a network of people who actually were properly supportive
But for a while the only people in the business world who actually supported me were all men
@mariyadelano@shantini@steve@joshua Neurotypicals Vs Neurodivergents is the new front. The amount of times I've had to deal neurotypicals being the problem...
@steve@shantini@joshua yep. And yet we all have to deal with it in our own individual circumstances too which is always difficult to wrap my head around
@film_girl@shantini my mistake. I’m fairly new to the conference scene, but I was of the impression it was good in comparison. I do agree there’s a long way to go, but I’m also happy to celebrate small successes along the way. :)
@mredig@shantini hey, we’re happy to see more diversity, but in 2023, having 51% of the population so underrepresented, especially given the investment and lip service to making tech less male-centric is really demoralizing to a lot of us. It’s awful when I’m not just one of the only female speakers but one of the only females at a conference at all.
