My flag always gets twisted up in the wind. I have it on those spinning-ring things on this cheap flagpole, but they rust quickly (it’s a coastal environment) and don’t spin very well.

Am I doing it wrong? Any tips to make it better? Or is it just too windy here and I should just keep going out there twice a day and untwist it?

@marcoarment I have the same problem and these replies have been very helpful. I’m going to try that spinning flagpole with some lithium grease in the joint.

Ben,

@marcoarment it's probably more a problem with the location of the pole. Lithium grease under the collars wouldn't hurt

bradbice,

@marcoarment I had this same problem and this pole from Amazon fixed it forever Grace Alley Flag Pole: 6 Foot... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SA2A7R6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

ppeirce,

@marcoarment just so you know that flag appears to be out of date and is missing representation for some important genders and orientations, I'd recommend updating it to the latest release version

@marcoarment I had the exact same problem with my flag. The problem with the spinners is that the flag isn't pulled straight out from the pole, the bottom is blowing up and over while the top is still hanging vertical. So the attachment points are always pointing down, and no amount of lubrication or new spinners will fix that.
The solution that worked for me was getting a new, more porous, flag. It looks like yours is nylon like my old one. A fabric flag with a looser weave fixed my wrapping.

@marcoarment put it on a rotating pole so the pole will move in the direction of the wind.

@marcoarment Mine has a plastic sleeve around the pole that helps minimize friction. I nearly threw it away when I installed it, thinking it was superfluous.

@marcoarment in my non coastal but Texas Eagle Scout experience it’s a few things, in order

  1. Weight/thickness/rigidity of the flag material itself. More is better
  2. Angle of the pole. Closer to 0° or 90°
  3. Super free spinning rings
  4. Free spinning pole in pole holder.
pingje,

@marcoarment It looks like Amazon has a lot of options that are either aluminum or plastic. Either should do better than steel in that environment.

inquisitivesoft,

@marcoarment nice flag!

morgan,

@marcoarment Maybe adding some weight to the bottom corner of the flag might help? I’d try some strong rustproof magnets and snap pairs of them against the fabric.

@marcoarment Are neighbors fighting the same behavior on their flags? If all are doing so, you may be without hope. But if any have a proven solution, you are gold.

alice,

@marcoarment Not having a flagpole, myself, just a random thought that pops to mind: can you spray the ring with polyurethane? Seal it prior to going up, and the coating should greatly reduce friction / sticking and corrosion?

I really ought to ask a few of my neighbours back in BC about how they manage it, also being on the coast.

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@alice I tried a PTFE-based spray that didn’t seem to do anything. Maybe it wasn’t the right lubricant.

@marcoarment Put it on a servo so you can untwist it remotely. 🤓
