@luca @konstantin I’m being slightly devils advocate here, but also genuine question:

Stack overflow is designed that the questions and answers are shared resources edited by multiple people, like Wikipedia. Would you support someone being able to force Wikipedia to delete their past contributions if they so chose?

I guess the difference is that SO puts the names of all contributors next to a question (created by, edited by), whereas Wikipedia only puts those in the history.

I took great care of iPad support. @IceCubesApp uses the iOS (TabBar) layout when the size class changes to a compact width. On regular width size classes, the app uses a custom sidebar layout. All that with SwiftUI, without reloading any root view so state is kept.

(Obscure only because I have to remember my schoolgirl French to tell it!)

Yikes. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/30/24145838/rabbit-r1-android-app-pixel-6a

I am baffled by these AI devices. There must be some demand. But even the Rabbit shouldn’t get a pass for being “only” $200. “Only” $200 can get you a phone. And that phone will do a bunch of similar things, without needing charging every four hours, and without a UI designed by a sadist.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell IMO the Humane pin would have utility if it was always recording, so it sees what you see, and can therefore use a whole load of context about your life.

Of course I wouldn’t trust any tech company to do that without being evil…

I deleted my previous quote boost about Balder’s Gate and AI voice cloning. Came off as accusatory to the actors and that’s not what I meant.

I meant that it irks me that the AI theft of visual artist’s work is generally perceived by the public as amazing and inevitable where the AI cloning of someone’s voice is seen as an intolerable threat to their identity and livelihood.

I get there’s a degree of difference but my point is that AI threatens all forms of creative work.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm hmmm, cloning one person’s voice (specifically) isn’t really a thing a human does, other than impersonators or comedians. But doing art “in the style of” another artist totally is; and doing art that’s inspired by the styles of multiple artists is really common.

I don’t think it’s fair to call it hypocritical to object to the thing that AI does but people don’t do, while not objecting to something AI does but people also do.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I'm also somewhat playing devil's advocate here. My actual views on AI are fairly complex, and coloured by the fact that I'm also anti various parts of copyright law in general, especially when it comes to derivative works.

In the absence of my anarchistic copyright views coming to fruition, I tend to come down to, 1: could a person plausibly do this? 2: would I be ok with a person doing this?

But yeah, it's complicated.

What is the deal with people releasing open source software and then complaining when people fork it or finding a way to make money off it.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@tom_t_21 @pixel I hope it isn’t. Because there’s two types of open source: one is about control of what other people do (the GPL crowd etc) and one type that’s actually about sharing (eg MIT licenses, letting other people use it with few strings attached). If you favour the latter type (as I do), other people monetising it should be fine!

Thinking about the mental gymnastics required to say "React is the most popular; it won; React is king; there's no sense in choosing anything else" while ALSO staring at a mountain of data that shows PHP is like 20 times more popular than React.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@collinsworth I’m confused; php is backend tech and react is front end. You can use both together. So they’re not competing… what am I missing?

I hear stories about people with niche or rare skillsets saving the day. You’re a student of historic architectural methodology? Come rebuild Notre Dame. You know COBOL? Fix failing governmental infrastructure during a health crisis. I am waiting for my moment, which will clearly be someone dashing into the room I’m in and yelling, “quick! We need someone who can sing the role of The Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!” My moment will come.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@superbetsy I too know the colours! I think I learnt Joseph at just the right age when my brain was forming, so I remember everything really clearly!

I’m not bad at Les Misérables either — learnt at a similar age (which led to the time that I asked my mum “what’s a prostitute?” And she had to come up with an age appropriate answer!

I’ve personally never used Uber, Lyft, or other so-called “ridesharing” services, and I never would. IMO they’re just glorified hitchhiking.

Likewise, I’ve never used or would use Airbnb.

I understand that a lot of people do use them and consider these crowdsourced services to be “normal”, but from my perspective it’s baffling why people put so much trust in totally unvetted, unaccountable randos.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@krzyzanowskim @lapcatsoftware yup. Uber displays their taxi license number in app, along with what city it’s registered with. While I have issues with how Uber pays their drivers, they’re as regulated as any taxi in terms of safety.

I find it very frustrating that App Store Connect leans on Dun and Bradstreet for a bunch of their business verification requirements. Anytime I interact with that company in ANY way I will then receive a steady stream of solicitations and spam for weeks to come, both in emails and phone calls.

My most recent interaction with them to update things for the new DSA requirements has started this barrage back up again.

😞

@rafa @_Davidsmith I closed my company a few years ago, but reopened it (or more technically, a new company with the same name but a different duns number) recently. I reactivated my Apple dev account… reckon I’ve got any chance of changing the company it’s attached to, or should I just give up and make a new dev account?

Anyone used NSUndoManager with ? I've now got all my business logic running on its own actor, which uses a custom serial queue (so is not on the main thread). I'm running into conceptual issues:

  • I'd really like to use the same undomanager that SwiftUI uses, but that one is presumably main thread confined?

  • When registering e.g. a redo operation, you have to perform that registration while the undo manager is undoing. So using a task inside the undo op would not work…

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@krzyzanowskim @mattiem so my UndoManager doesn't have to be mainactor. But the one SwiftUI provides does -- I'm basing that on the fact that some very old Cocoa concurrency docs defined NSUndoManager as thread confined, and SwiftUI definitely uses it on the main thread, so there it must stay.

I sympathise with hobbyist app developers who suddenly have to provide their home address to users. But… I also think that consumer protection should mean that if someone sells you something, you should have a right to know who that someone is and how to contact them. I don’t know how best to reconcile those things…

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi I’m a queer/trans app creator and I can't say that hasn't crossed my mind! I guess that's why I'm glad the requirement is "a contact address" not "your home address". Getting one elsewhere is a cost of doing business I guess. As I mentioned in another comment, my accountant will allow you to register your company at his office address. Granted, that supposes that you've registered a company and got an accountant, but that's a damn good idea anyway to protect yourself from many things!

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi If you're putting out a free app, you're not a trader so the issue is moot?
