Just heard about this on NPR and they mentioned at least 7 cars went into the water.

Rather than a Zip line (which implies a one-way cable), instead do it like a tram line where the uphill cars/buckets are largely balanced by the descending cars.

Recently I saw a meme showing some poor crewman with his window facing the red glow of a warp nacelle, but I've lost it now.

Does anyone know where I can find it?

@cerebrate @swope
That would be it. Boimler wasn't aware that he could adjust the opacity of the nacelle-facing window until Rutherford came in.

Other, similarly bad quarters were adjacent to the holodeck where senior crew engaged in some 'extracurricular' activities. You would think it would have better soundproofing, but this is 'Lower Decks".

And here was the meme post from Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/startrekmemes/comments/16l1d0o/quite_possibly_the_worst_quarters_you_could_get

I wouldn’t fraking move to Texas either.

Apple is moving an AI team from San Diego to Austin. Most of them are unwilling to relocate, risking termination.

Just a quick note: The San Diego they are being asked to move from is San Diego, TX. They would be moving within the same state.

Part of why tech workers at huge orgs like this need a union:

Being compelled to relocate to a forced birthing state is violent as hell

So much more to collective power than just getting paid

I will say, like @stroughtonsmith, I have concerns about the lack of an Apple event around Vision Pro and the seeming "drop it with a press release" nature of the release. For a brand new product category, that raises a lot of questions.

jrholmes,
@jrholmes@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl @stroughtonsmith Let's assume that this release of Vision Pro is aimed at developers (see it being lavishly introduced at last year's WWDC), they may not want to call too much attention to it by the general public which would be disappointed by the price of this version of the product.

When it moves beyond developer focus, you will see that public reveal.

Good morning, ! Jumpstarting the week with an easy recovery run on a chilly Monday morning. 🤘🏻🥶🤘🏻

@The_KamikaZEN Good run and beats my own for Mondays (when I break an Outdoor Walk into 15 minute chunks to get in my 7 workouts).

Hundreds of features.

17 pages.

7 chapters.

2 OSes.

Here it is: my annual review of iOS and iPadOS. Let's go 🚀

@viticci Every bit the excellent review of the Apple OSes that we have all come to expect from you over the last decade.

A just discovered tiny change that has inconvenienced me is that text tones are now somehow separate from ringtones. That means that the custom ringtones that I created are not appearing as a valid 'text tone' for email alerts, etc.

My flag always gets twisted up in the wind. I have it on those spinning-ring things on this cheap flagpole, but they rust quickly (it’s a coastal environment) and don’t spin very well.

Am I doing it wrong? Any tips to make it better? Or is it just too windy here and I should just keep going out there twice a day and untwist it?

jrholmes,
@jrholmes@hachyderm.io avatar

@marcoarment Are neighbors fighting the same behavior on their flags? If all are doing so, you may be without hope. But if any have a proven solution, you are gold.

Don’t kid yourself. “Artificial intelligence“ is just Big Tech’s way of saying “hey, it’s not our fault. It’s the machine’s!“ In point of fact, every malign use of “AI“ is really just some human-composed algorithm doing something that maximizes profit or control at the expense of people. We must not let these companies off the hook. They’re in charge. Not the machine. Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

jrholmes,
@jrholmes@hachyderm.io avatar

@leo As a 'best excuse' type of response to that accusation, the "AI" might produce something that wasn't designed to align with a conventional algorithm (for profit or control). That could easily be what we've seen being produced.

But, like so much in tech, we are seeing this work in progress. If the output from AI ISN'T aligning with the intent for profit or control, that is the goal that they will be aimed at and achieved in due course.

Naive me, who had never seen one, assumed a Laserdisc was just a regular old CD-sized thing used for video, before my time. Nobody told me they were 12" in diameter 😧 People kept collections of movies like this in their homes?

jrholmes,
@jrholmes@hachyderm.io avatar

@stroughtonsmith People kept similar-sized music albums (and they were 21.5 minutes per side) by the hundreds in their home.

Damn. Now I'm feeling old.
