A number of people have asked recently if there is livestreaming on the Fediverse.
Yes, there is!
The Fediverse has a dedicated livestreaming platform called @owncast. You can follow #OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc and you will see posts from the accounts in your timeline when they start streaming.
Owncast has a built-in Twitch-style chat system which you can use either anonymously without logging in, or with an account from Mastodon etc.
If you want to run your own livestream you will need to set up your own server, because OwnCast doesn't currently allow servers to offer signups to outsiders. You'll need to be slightly techy to do this, but as installations go it is relatively painless. More info at https://owncast.online
Alternatively, a much easier solution is to sign up on a PeerTube server that offers livestreams. PeerTube streaming doesn't have chat by default, but there's a plug-in that adds it.
It's up to each server to decide if it offers livestreaming and chat, you'll have to ask your PeerTube server admin about this if it's not available.
PeerTube is mainly designed for pre-recorded videos though, and the streaming was added later. OwnCast is designed entirely for livestreaming.
@feditips I'd really like to setup Owncast, or even just live streaming on my PeerTube instance. The server stuff is there. Sadly my bandwidth isn't. But, at least there's the possibility of watching.
