@HailsandAles a really weird memory I have is Craig Kilborn interviewing Bill Murray on this question on an early Daily Show. Murray somehow landed on "sock shoe sock shoe" and Kilborn, condescendingly but correctly, said: "Oh, no, I'm sorry, no...no."
@HailsandAles There's a really cool scene in "Infinite Jest", where, as an aside, the narrator says, "X was a sock and a shoe, sock and a shoe" person.
It had never even occurred to me, before that, that everyone wasn't sock and a sock, shoe and a shoe.
