Background is a blooming palo verde bearing pendulous boughs laden with yellow blossoms almost completely obscuring the thin, skin-like green bark.

I’ve been in this business, writing software professionally, since I started my first software business at 16 in high school an an Apple ][. That’s 45 fucking years. It would never occur to me to steal other people’s code, let alone their likenesses, voices, or art.

Just eject these thieving “AI” companies into the sun. These people, and the VCs that fund them, are a cancer on the software industry.

In Fast Company, I wrote about how wild it is that Ford, GM, and Stellantis no longer offer any sedan models in the US.

That's bad for Americans -- and it's risky for the Big Three.

Stack Overflow announced that they are partnering with OpenAI, so I tried to delete my highest-rated answers.

Stack Overflow does not let you delete questions that have accepted answers and many upvotes because it would remove knowledge from the community.

So instead I changed my highest-rated answers to a protest message.

Within an hour mods had changed the questions back and suspended my account for 7 days.

Diff view of a stack overflow question showing it being changed from the original text to a protest message, then being changed back again by a mod. Protest text reads: Why does OpenAI get to profit from our work? I have removed this question in protest of Stack Overflow's decision to partner with OpenAI. This move steals the labour of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow with no way to opt-out. OpenAI has a history of flooding the web with inaccurate information and have explicitly stated that they will never pay creators for their work.

"Terms can change without notice" etc clauses are often unenforceable.

People should class-action these predatory scrapers. I BET m$ has used data they did not have rights to for training. Errbody should sue. Sue sue sue. "AI" is the providence of mankind, not some rich douche

Or sulfur particles with a reflective metallic core + soot + ozone hole?
Let's roll the dice 🙄🤡

For some reason, I feel like Elon could call this a free speech issue, and would not really be shocked if SCOTUS judged all pollution to be speech. Because, why not lol. Bribes are speech, CO2 can't be a pollutant, presidential immunity is real, etc.
Interesting times.

This is not justice. This is a racist, ethnonationalist law and does NOT make Jewish people more safe.

A future for the web is the radical idea that its bad to put all data in a single place owned by 3 companies and rented by a few hundred. The internet wasnt a mistake, the cloud was a mistake. Platforms were a mistake. A mistake where its not only possible but routine for "everyone's health data" to get stolen. https://infosec.exchange/@patrickcmiller/112341111375581551

I need to share my health data with like 3 people that arent me. Why on earth is that data in the same pile as literally everyone else's.

@jonny companies are allergic to capital expenditures, and selling off your servers in exchange for a monthly fee can really make a quarter pop.

Hey! Remember those toots from yesterday of mine? I've got a name now for the phenomenon I've been picking at:

    Weak Induction

I'm probably not using it correctly in this explanation, but this is when you're looking at something (say an online post) and, because you have a brain which is constantly looking for patterns and motives, you induce things about what the author means.

But watch out for weak inductions! If what you assert isn't plainly there in the post, you might be on about nothing!

    cykonot,
    @cykonot@mas.to avatar

@TechConnectify single-issue voter type people are distressfully common, and digital siloing is not helping. Maybe their whole stream + network is about whatever tf, so when they come in with the unhinged "why don't you disavow murder" take when all you're trying to do is like fulfill your slot in the algo or bring attention to 1 other thing, their context is the 10 posts they JUST saw about it.

It's like people bending themselves into caricatures to fit the weird algorithms running everything

What is interesting is so many young white men believe they are entitled to respect by birthright, and when it doesn't go as expected, they act as if society has rejected them, and completely lose their shit. They think they have a right to violent behavior, because the world is so "unfair" Meanwhile, this is only a tiny taste of what minorities deal with every day.

In a twist of irony, US immigration policies have left China with the upper hand in 5G technology. Who knew denying a Caltech and MIT graduate a visa renewal could be such a game-changer?

@yogthos maybe we should have actual immigrants instead of visa slaves? Like, visas are good for keeping down wages, but making them actual citizens would clearly be better for workers already here and the overall economy since they wouldn't build skills etc then leave.

Then again, these are the same people who decided to put all the factories in China because they hate the poors, so what do i know
