the anti-fluoride people are back... I mean, if you like anti-vax stuff why not? It's the same swindle.

"precious bodily fluids" and all that.

I hate the taste of mint so I'm always looking for toothpaste that tastes better... I was horrified to discover that if you go of the beaten path with toothpaste there are 100s of brands with "no fluoride" which only a tiny number of people really need... Be careful if you use a "crunchy" brand ... fluoride is amazing.

@futurebird Thanks for this information! I don't dislike the taste of mint but I do hate mint burn. Some toothpastes are painful!

Three former military officers — including two who advised — filed a brief with the Supreme Court arguing that even if a president ordered the military to assassinate a rival, the military would refuse to do it. https://supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/23/23-939/303384/20240319133828340_AFPI%20Amici%20Brief%203.19.24.pdf

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

Since we were taking things easy today, I spent some time watching television with my husband. I try to avoid this pastime generally, but today was an exception.
I noticed the airways are flooded with advertising for the upcoming academy awards show.
Over and over, I heard about old, old directors, actors, and composers who were lauded for being creative and productive for such a long time.
I couldn't help but feel that they are lucky they aren't politicians because then they would be too old to be useful.

Damn, C diff is back! After six weeks I really thought I might be in the clear. @GottaLaff I thought of you and hope you're doing well.

jinglepostman,
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff Yup. No antibiotics, I took Florastor Rx, ate fermented foods. I'm over 65 and that's the first thing in the list of "why it recurs" but I hope the next Rx knocks it the heck out. I'm going to visit my son in Italy next month and have to be OK for that!

jinglepostman,
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff I finished Vanco on Jan. 17, and it was smooth sailing after that. Or so I thought. What else can we do to keep it at bay? New Rx is Dificid, but I just got the call and haven't filled it yet.

jinglepostman,
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff Will do, thanks. Although I'm really sorry you have to deal with this too, it helps me to know I'm not alone. Good luck to both of us!

jinglepostman, (edited )
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff So far…After 2.5 days, Dificid is taking hold! ... Still gasping at the co-pay, but if C diff really goes away for good, it will have been worth it.

jinglepostman, (edited )
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff I was lying awake last night wondering if it was smart to put all that in a post anyone can see. But who knows, maybe it will help someone else searching on C diff for support or enlightenment. Glad you're doing OK, and fingers crossed for us both!

Fantastic -- if super-distressing -- article by Gisele Navarro about the horrible state of product reviews online

The tl;dr is that Google seems to overweight reviews from longstanding big journalism brands ...

... but many of those brands, like Popular Science, were long ago bought up by private equity or conglomerates, then hollowed out ...

... so they now produce crappy articles that are probably lying about their "test labs" to please Google

https://housefresh.com/david-vs-digital-goliaths/

Read it! So good

jinglepostman,
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@clive So interesting! Just yesterday I was looking at reviews of a specific garment and was struck by how they all seemed the same from site to site. Same choices, same "what we like" and "what we don't like" about each one (and every site happening to be "updated" on the very day I was looking). Now I know why! Thanks for sharing!

When you think about do you imagine a timeline? What shape is it? how wide is it? Does it extend in a particular direction?

When I think of the previous decades I see a wide steep slope extending down to the right. The future is up to the left just behind me (unless I turn around and try to look at it) The past is an impossibly wide set of steep cellar stairs littered with knickknacks.

How to you see time?

jinglepostman,
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@NatureMC @futurebird I read several replies before finding yours, which is something like how I envision time. The years are circling round, spiraling upward. The current year is at my eye level. Such an interesting question!

Oh my, after 10PM! I'm not tired, but I am trying to get my sleep patterns sorted. I might break off shortly, shut down the PC and go watch TV in bed until the news is over

I'm not feeling too bad now, no reaction to my VAX today, I think I just need to rest my brain for a few hours.. I'll be back before you wake up.

What is the best sandwich you ever had?

jinglepostman,
@jinglepostman@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I am so happy you asked! It was a grilled cheese sandwich at the Christmas market at Winchester Cathedral in 2015. The enchanting fragrance of slightly burnt cheese drew me to the stall and once my order was in my greedy hands, I was in raptures. The cheese was Lyburn Gold and Barber's 1833 cheddar. It was nighttime and cold and the cathedral was lit up, and everything combined to make a perfect moment. "Many's the long night I've dreamt of cheese, toasted mostly."
