I didn't realize ACM makes available the full-ish archive of the LISP Pointers journal SIGPLAN published from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s. It contains most of the papers of most of the issues, an historical treasure of practical value.

In the current season of Star Trek: Discovery, there have been two lines of dialogue that have made me want to throw something at the TV, both of which involved the same word, "solve", used as a noun, and both uttered by Captain Burnham.

"Do we have a solve for this?"

"OK, so what's the solve?"

What sort of fresh hell is this? What's wrong with the perfectly cromulent word "solution"? The writer(s) responsible for this abomination should be sacked.

New York Judge Merchan imposed a gag order on Tuesday that prohibits from attacking witnesses, prosecutors and jurors, the latest effort to rein in the former president’s wrathful rhetoric about his legal opponents.

The judge imposed the order at the request of the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which brought the case against Trump.

@GottaLaff Imposing a gag order on Trump is one thing. Enforcing the gag order is something altogether different. I'd love to see it happen, though.

A short history of the ASUS Eee PC and netbooks.

I never got one because, although cool, the limited use I'd have done wouldn't justify even the affordable price as I had no mobility or form factor needs.

@amoroso I got one from Woot, IIRC. I still have it, though it's just in the pile of antique crap that I hold on to for some reason. It was a neat little machine. I ran Window 7 on it, and used it as a travel machine.

I’ve tried theee times now to have an AI write programs to solve this year’s problems, and in each case they’ve written lovely code with useful comments that doesn’t work.

If there’s an AI that can actually generate solutions, I’d like to know which one. I used ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot.

(And yes, I only did this after I’d written my own working solutions.)

pitching an idea whose time has come:

dvd-era netflix for lego

for $30 a month they send you a lego set, you build it and send it back, they clean bricks, restock, and send you the next set in your queue. more variety, less plastic. and you could even call it blockbuster.

joeygibson,
@joeygibson@hachyderm.io avatar

@jed I would totally subscribe to that. I love building Lego sets, but once it’s built, now I have to find a place for it. Tearing it down and shipping it off sounds great.

Maybe include an option to buy it, if you really like it.

Envy me! I just put down a deposit on this incredible trip through the west of Ireland next March. It’s a musical tour led by a great Irish tenor banjo player called Enda Scahill. It’s a week of going to landmarks, playing in pubs, getting banjo instruction, and soaking up the Irish culture. I followed along online with the first of these trips he did a few weeks ago, and just had to do it myself.

Every time I eat microwave popcorn, which isn’t very often, I’m left wishing I hadn’t. There’s always a chemical aftertaste, and weird feeling in my mouth. Lately, I’ve been popping corn on the stove in coconut oil, which is delicious, but tonight it was late and I was too lazy.

joeygibson,
@joeygibson@hachyderm.io avatar

@snarkysteff Like so many people my age, I had an air popper in the 80s or 90s, that used no oil, and produced the popcorn equivalent of cardboard. But it was “healthy”. I’m assuming this silicone thing does it differently?

I knew absolutely nothing about Ahsoka Tano, going into the Ahsoka show, but holy shit, this has become one of my favorite SW things. I love how zen she is about everything, and so much of this show really felt like a great homage to classic samurai movies. And good lord, but Ray Stevenson owned every scene he was in. RIP, Baylan/Titus Pullo.

Please, Disney, keep making more of this!

If the GOP shuts down the government, that means 1.3 million servicemembers will go without pay. This after a Republican senator, Tommy Tuberville, has single-handedly put a hold on all top-level military promotions and appointments because he disagrees with the Pentagon’s policy of reimbursing travel expenses for members who must seek abortions out of state. Remind me again why the GOP thinks it’s pro-military.

A judge has ruled that committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House.

Judge Engoron, ruling Tuesday in a civil lawsuit brought by ’s attorney general, found that the former president and his company deceived banks, insurers and others by massively overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing financing. 1/...

201: Miner 2049er (1982)

Creator Bill Hogue told me this early platformer arrived from “wanting to blend together fun elements from many different arcade games” he enjoyed. Aspects from Donkey Kong and Pac-Man combined to create something fresh; but Hogue also added unique features within his game’s levels that affected gameplay and forced you to create new strategies. Top stuff – as is sequel Bounty Bob.
