Apple is pre-announcing some Accessibility features likely coming to iOS 17 later this year, and we have the details on @macstories.

Two features are especially a big deal:

  • Personal Voice will let users who are at risk of losing their voice create a synthetic version of it. All done with Neural Engine on-device.

  • Assistive Access is a brand new, simplified UI mode for iPhone and iPad that streamlines the entire UI.

New personal voice feature

@viticci @macstories @imyke personal voice is going to be so meaningful. I lost my aunt to ALS and when she lost her ability to speak, she never used the text to speech machine they gave her, it was simply too cumbersome. Having it with her, able to help complete sentences, filling in gaps, easing the transition would have helped give her a voice for much longer.

ockali,

@viticci @macstories My grandmother of 91 years who has been an avid iPhone user for the last 10+ years had to recently give it up due to increasingly poor vision and reduced cognitive abilities. I think those new features would've been great for her 🥺

@viticci @macstories I want to be the first person who inhales helium and teaches the phone to speak in a high pitched squeaky voice.

joshisasoftie,

@viticci @macstories these are some great ideas! Would love to see these adapted to Android.

sumomo,

@viticci @macstories @craiggrannell I don’t have any disability yet, but is it wrong that I might actually want to use the assistive ui because it looks like it might let me use my phone for what I actually want to use it for?

dearlybelovedtreasure,

@viticci @macstories I need to have a word with you. I just signed up for Mastodon some hours ago... You've got to listen to me, please... It's only gonna take some minutes... I'm fast running out of time...

zora,

@viticci @macstories I'm autistic and sometimes get very uncomfortable with speaking. When I'm on a call, I usually just force myself to talk regardless because people don't understand this disability, but perhaps Live Speech could be a solution where I won't get any demeaning comments.

gracjan,

@viticci @macstories It sounds like we're kinda getting Dynamic Type for macOS. Finally! I hope it won't be limited to the apps they listed, and developers will be able to integrate with it. I wear glasses and like to increase the text size in apps when possible, but this ability is neither as prevalent on the Mac as it is on iOS, nor as easy. I try to use Hover Text, but it's just not the same. I also wonder how the animation-stopping feature will work.

@viticci I wonder if the Personal Voice feature (while an incredible feature in its own right) is an early part of a bigger AI story for Apple.

@viticci @macstories @flargh This looks really cool. I really want to hear @jeremyburge’s take on this since he’s been interested in simplifying the iOS UI.

@viticci Point and Speak would be a really awesome feature for an Apple headset as well!

@viticci @macstories This looks like a great option. Looking forward to seeing reviews from accessibility experts once this ships.
