To respond en masse to all the Mastodon folks who have been sending me angry messages regarding my presence here versus on other social media platforms, I'll say only this: that sure isn't a great way to convince a person to spend more time here. I'm baffled by it, and very disappointed.
@weatherwest I'm fine with the cross-posting, even though the posts repeat and drop portions of your original X posts. I just don't want to miss your YouTube Lives and new Weather West blog posts. I really need those advance announcements you post so I can adjust my schedule. Your analysis of weather patterns has greatly reduced stress during our winegrape harvest. Thank you!
@weatherwest I've tried to contact you here and on twitter that your applet isn't working consistently here, which I would think you'd like to know. When your posts here are just the first couple words of the whole post on twitter, it's not useful. I actually don't care where else you are.
I don't mind the crossposting, but whatever tool you're using will often truncate the posts mid-sentence, so it's really hard to follow. I would say stay, but give Mastodon a fair chance. Nearly everyone I've seen comment on it says the raw numbers here are lower but the actual engagement they get is disproportionately high. It requires a different approach from Twitter; Mastodon only really works if you actively engage with it. Trying to use it as a broadcast medium for one-way comms is always going to have limitations.
Hello Moggie. Respectfully, there happens to be a large and growing population of Fediverse users who appreciate the broadcast feeds from several different sources. Some of those feeds do engage and involve community, as well as inform us in near real time.
I hope that you'll be able to bear with us; and I'm certain that you will not receive bogus information or virulence from any of us.

What I meant was that broadcasting simply can't spread to the same extent on a federated network. You reach people who follow you, and some people within their networks, but your ability to reach people outside of that network is very limited. That's just how the fediverse functions at its most basic level; very differently from a monolithic platform where content tends to get pushed at everyone whether they want to see it or not.
I'm not really sure what to make of this, or the best way to proceed. But from my perspective, it certainly doesn't make for a very constructive environment for public science communication. I'm not making any decisions right now, but if folks really hate the crossposting that much I guess I can pull the plug.
@weatherwest Thank you for posting your content whether directly or cross-posting. To explain some of the reaction, many people here feel very strongly that open social media is vital to our future and have a very hard time understanding why people who seem to align with socially conscious principles would continue to support corporate platforms with their content. Clearly there is a decision to be made about reach, but please consider continuing to help us build this open platform.
@weatherwest I really appreciate your analysis, but I simply won’t follow you on Elon’s site. If you stop crossposting, your voice will fall silent for me.

@weatherwest I genuinely value the cross posting! it is sometimes difficult to follow threads because they aren’t connected in the cross posts but the information is still tremendously valuable
