Do you consider yourself a nerd? (Definition: a person who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject, especially one of specialist or niche interest)

In this context I’m talking about the word in its positive meaning, it can be tech, board games, movies, etc. It’s usually if you are a problem solver, a thinker, a techie.

They say Mastodon is a niche platform for nerds so I just want to see the numbers. Don’t let this influence your decision. If you think you’re even a slightest bit nerdy, it’s a yes. Otherwise no. Boosts appreciated.

@samafunk I do not feel surprised by these answers at all. Who adopts new potentially extremely confusing tech like the federated mastodon universe? Who even would spend the time figuring out how to choose an instance?

rooktallon,

@rolle If you call DCI (Drum corps International) a Niche interest, then I'm totally a nerd.

ke7zum,

@rolle If this is a poll I am unable to vote due to my client. I consider myself a nerd in some things, not in others, and in the end, that's ok. those things are ever changing from day to day, week to week.

@ke7zum The poll is closed.

@rolle IMO what’s being described here is a geek rather than a nerd. A geek has a community of fellow enthusiasts and can be sociable and understood within that context. A nerd is someone who has no community and doesn’t fit in anywhere.

@rolle Absolutely!

@rolle @xtaran I think my username speaks for itself..

parsley,

@rolle
I don't know - my interests tend to wander before I'm quite to the point where I'd consider myself "extremely knowledgeable" - but rather, when I start to realize how much I don't know about it.

And enthusiastic? I mostly feel jaded: I won't solve the big problems (any problems) in the next area either.

mundi,

@rolle
I don't consider myself a nerd, because I don't believe in self consideration.

@rolle We're pretty nerdy about maps & showing all places in an easy way (which isn't easy at all!), not sure if this is considered officially as nerds though.

@rolle hell yes!

triadne,

@rolle I think other people might consider me a nerd, since I am generally good at figuring things out and am very fast learning technical things, but if you put me in front of an expert I absolutely don't measure up. I consider myself a renaissance woman.

remi,

@rolle it took me a whole week to pick a mastodon server because I'm a nerd in multiple and unrelated topics… So, yeah, nerd here 🙋

@rolle
Not anymore. No time or energy for nerding in this life situation.

Perhaps in a few years again

@rolle

Since my definition of a nerd differs, I don't vote.

KopenhaferDonna,

@rolle However, we are extremely diverse in the subject matter of our niche interests 😂

hypolite,

@rolle I'm kind of the anti-nerd according to this definition. My knowledge is wide but shallow, and as a result I believe I don't have anything interesting to say to anyone.

@rolle I can't help but feel that you really need to make an effort to not be a nerd. I mean, surely most people have something that they are passionate about and want to share with everyone who will listen/can be forced to listen. Although I've got about 5 things, so I may be using up 4 other people's nerding.

tiggy,

@rolle The words geek and nerd have the exact opposite meanings in the USA compared with English (UK). So in the UK I am a geek (techie) with a background as a software engineer.

Kavah,

@rolle well maybe less common in nerdspace, but I'm a nerd for the dreams at night

I wonder if every scientist or artist would be a nerd according to the Definition, too

Anthro,

@rolle

be like…

@rolle
Maybe it's a space to be yourself?

@rolle see, I'm conflicted by this question.
I consider myself a geek, and my definition is: nerds are people who know stuff about things, so they might know everything about a genre of movies, or be big into sci fi, or anything that involves pure knowledge. Geeks are the ones who do things, so they are the ones who build servers, or write websites, etc.
So I don't consider myself a nerd - but I think by your meaning... I am, so I'll answer Yes...

@rolle How do you factor in the fact that you might have a very nerdy group of followers?

scrhill,

@rolle Yes extremely absolutely violently
