Sorry, the sabotage of Twitter is not a “disaster for democracy”—it’s the logical and inevitable endpoint of surveillance capitalist control of our communications infrastructure.

Those who control a message’s delivery system control the message.

Twitter was always owned by surveillance capitalists—it NEVER served democracy.

@atomicpoet Everyone thinks it's a utility communication system. It's actually an advertising platform that unexpectedly became a communication system

protimetheft,

@mike @atomicpoet but didn't it basically start as just messaging, back in the beginning? They've just been TRYING to make it an advertising platform, to much failure, basically. But yeah it's always been a walled off system, sure.

Always knew they'd go too far. Greed only works for a while then money dries up. All people aren't as stupid as the ones they always fool

Yes. Twitter fell down the funnel just like all the rest utilizing the Silicon Valley’s ”disruption” pipeline:

  1. Sell your product at a huge loss
  2. Continue securing funding for years to boost stock
  3. Take loans against stock value to keep selling product at a loss
  4. Buy competing products to boost stock value
  5. Take more loans
  6. Make yourself irreplaceable
  7. Once market dominance achieved, make eveone pay or receive a shittier service than before 1.

@atomicpoet Twitter was never perfect, but its previous owners knew it had problems and were putting in some effort to work on those problems. Twitter was also a functional communication hub for charities, activists, marginalized groups and more (and yes, there were always awful people there too).

As time passes, it’s becoming more obvious to me that Musk bought Twitter purely to disrupt it. To squash whatever good it might possibly generate.

ChickenPwny,

@atomicpoet lol whatever you were the biggest twitter addict of all of us

petttro,

@atomicpoet It's just a private company. Why do you expect that? It works under the laws. Let say McDonald's serves burgers, not democracy.

@atomicpoet

thanks to write it !

Renegade_GDI,

@atomicpoet well it was Jack Dorsey, he's gonna create another social media that would be similar. I mean MTG would get banned there again

Atexjam,

@atomicpoet what worries this days is the fact most of the hardware networks are practically monopolized sinkholes with fewer and fewer choices AT&T practically runs most of Americas communication networks in Kenya Safaricom in now a bank with a telecoms branch in every town.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@Atexjam Yeah, I think this is a core reason why SPANs are so important.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone_ad_hoc_network

Atexjam,

@atomicpoet tbh i didn't know about SPANs.
I will give them a look .

hesgen,

@atomicpoet @Atexjam As a radio scientist, mesh networks such as SPANs interest me greatly, but their implementation requires planning and management.

Connecting remote communities is one application; another is emergency comms in times of natural disaster and war.

Telcos and surveillance capitalists don't seem particularly concerned with mesh networking.

scfw0x0f,

@atomicpoet It's a disaster if there isn't something to replace its function in a timely manner.

It's not clear if any of the alternatives are ready to scale to replace it. They're all doing magnificent jobs of trying to get there, but there are still a lot of Twitter users.

@atomicpoet which is why I view Bluesky with such scepticism. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice... I think not.

Tattered,

@atomicpoet Absolutely. Still, Dorsey’s decision to sell to a more ruthless thug might be an indication that the use of the platform was leaning toward the more liberal. After all, one of the first things Musk did was to can all of the ethics people and give the reins to actual Nazis. You are absolutely right; or the deal would not have been made.

@atomicpoet yes!!!! Thank you. This message is worth repeating from time to time. I'm not really sure how people have got it twisted.

Tonydunc,

@atomicpoet it did provide me with the most effective source of expert information I have ever had. I was able to glean experts with integrity and insight pretty quickly, starting with climate change, but then legal political and a free 2/24/22 military info

Sean,
@Sean@liberal.city avatar

@atomicpoet after Jan 6 riots/insurrection there was all yes clamor against Parler which had single digit percentage of communications while FB messenger, Twitter, Apple messenger, and SMS carried the bulk of the messages between the 700-800 people who interrupted the government procedure (legal definition of a insurrection), weird that FB, Twitter, Apple and the cell phone carriers weren't the target of the Establishment's ire, just the least influential company.

@atomicpoet If Twitter goes down the Malaysian govt will just use Facebook 🙃

The federation will be the last thing they think about. Because these are people who cant even run decent govt websites 😆

I do hope it is the opposite of course.

Anyway, I think Malaysian democracy will do fine. We are a scrappy bunch.
