Teri_Kanefield,

Has anyone tried the new Activity Pub plugin for Wordpress?

It’s out of beta now.

I have a Wordpress site (which I need as an author) and a Mastodon instance (which I need because I am a control freak).

If Activity Pub works as it should, I won’t need both — but we can’t get Activity Pub to work on a Wordpress site.

Has anyone tried this?

I will trade legal analysis for technical help. (Fediverse economics)

The Activity Pub works like a charm, but it is essentially setting up a new Mastodon account and your followers will need to follow that account, too.

Teri_Kanefield,

@Tengrain I am assuming there will be a way to move them the way people do when they move accounts.

@Teri_Kanefield

I have not found it if there is.

Teri_Kanefield,

@Tengrain You do it from the account you want to close and move.

I'd start by asking your followers to just follow your new account.

But then the way to do it is go to your profile and move your account. But you should ask feditips or someone else.

I did it last November while Mastodon was overloaded and it didn't work well.

@Teri_Kanefield I haven't although I do have a Wordpress blog. Should I?

@Teri_Kanefield Hi Teri,

I run the plugin on my personal WordPress site. It was working well, but recently it seems to be having some problems with the coton function. The crown function is basically a queue of actions that run periodically based on time. Thinks like posting new WordPress posts to Mastodon. I’m sure it will get fixed soon.

MyHonestOpinionAccount,

@Teri_Kanefield

I did.

I followed the instructions for @feditips

It didn't work.

@Teri_Kanefield One thing to consider, and I am getting out of my area of expertise. Before installing any WordPress plugin, make sure the plugin does not introduce a security problem. WordPress itself seems very secure but many plugins not so much. My companies website built on WordPress was hit by a security problem 2 weeks ago due to a SEO plugi. I don't have a recommendation for where to find out the security for any WordPress plugin.

Doire,

@Teri_Kanefield
@Edent is doing this right now.
I can't say I understand it, but it's interesting reading the journey.

@wiredog @Teri_Kanefield @jimgon Only on Newbie Mode: WordPress.com hosting has this set up already, so I only had to click a checkbox.

@Teri_Kanefield

Maybe. I’m in Australia and my CA CSLB complaint is languishing. Your SFO friend said he would review and send a letter, but can’t handle it beyond that. I’ll be back November first.

Not using Worpress myself. But @liztai experimented with it, as far as I know.
However, at least the self hosted option still seems to be tricky: https://elizabethtai.com/2023/10/17/now-my-posts-are-not-appearing-on-the-fediverse/

@Teri_Kanefield I've not used the WordPress plugin, but my recommendation is to keep both; Mastodon will get features you might want to use first.

@Teri_Kanefield I have the same experience as you, couldn't get activity pub to work to my own Mastodon instance a while back. Will try again soon.

@Teri_Kanefield I've had issues myself ... and I manage WordPress for clients. Would love to get this figured out.

@Teri_Kanefield I'm using the plugin to pump out articles from the site.

I use it to differentiate between personal me and author me.

Also, others who write for the site will have a way to have their posts automatically appear on the Fediverse whether they are here full time or not.

Teri_Kanefield,

Thank you for all the comments. I will go carefully through them tomorrow, including following Feditips advice.

Really, I appreciate it 💕

@Teri_Kanefield Here is an interesting article about publishing from one platform to multiple audiences.

@Teri_Kanefield I tried it briefly. I noticed that it made my username my WordPress username even if the display name was different. There didn't seem to be any way to change this.

This was a big problem because I used my admin account as the sole account on this small site and I don't want that the username advertised.

I don't have comments on this particular site so I think I'm going to remove the plug-in. It's nice but not suited to my needs at the moment.

@Teri_Kanefield I installed it for my blog and it created an instance. However, none of my posts appeared on the instance, and I wasn't able to follow it with my Mastodon account. (I have a self-hosted blog)

What I do instead is I have a separate Mastodon account on botsin.space and I post to it using a WordPress plugin named Mastodon Autopost.

There are other plugins for this purpose, including Jetpack from WordPress, which added Mastodon to its Sharing service.

Yes. My site is configured for it. User page is

@janetannelogan.wordpress.com@janetannelogan.wordpress.com

I'm using the free version, and therefore, it's sie level. I'm the only author, so that works.

@Teri_Kanefield I have it turned on for GeekDad.com. It lets every one of our members have an account on our domain and everything they publish goes out as a Mastodon post under their name. With the Friends co-plugin, responses become comments too. Really neat!

Piousunyn,

@Teri_Kanefield I kind of have ignored my art Wordpress for sometime now, due to illness and have not done any art since then. It may be fun to go back in and upgrade it and connect it to Mastodon. Though I find art here gets crickets, or maybe it is just my art is not very well received?😄

housepanther,

@Teri_Kanefield I tried it and didn't like it. One of my followers turned me on to as a replacement for . Ghost is so much better. Check out my blog at https://goblackcat.com. This will give you an idea of what Ghost looks like. Ghost looks to be better for people who like writing and publishing whereas WordPress has more or less morphed into something for business with a side of blogging.

@Teri_Kanefield I have a blog hosted by Wordpress, I tried to follow their instructions, but was unable to make it work. It acted like it was going to work, the account looks like it is there, but I can't figure out how to follow it and I could not see a new post from the Mastodon side.

@dr2chase @Teri_Kanefield I ran into this. What ended up being wrong was that my blog was under a subdirectory ( /blog, like a sensible person) so the web finger service didn’t get installed properly. I think I had to play games with one of the top level dot directories to get it to work. I threw some rambling notes at https://www.sidhe.org/blog/2023/09/23/setting-up-the-activitypub-plugin-on-a-dreamhost-vps-hosted-wordpress-blog/ about it.

dr2chase,
@dr2chase@ohai.social avatar

@wordshaper @Teri_Kanefield I am just taking it as they host it; as far as I know, they chose my directory layout, etc.

I.e., it's their bug. They may not care about people like me, and I am too busy to schlep my stuff elsewhere, so, eh.

wordshaper,
@wordshaper@weatherishappening.network avatar

@dr2chase @Teri_Kanefield Probably their bug, sure. If Teri is using a self hosted Wordpress install rather than using Wordpress to do the hosting then it may be the issue I ran into.

libationlegacy,

@Teri_Kanefield The docs I've seen are all about creating a new account with new postings. This actually makes me worried that existing posts can't be connected.
