Guess: which of these appliances consumes the greatest amount of energy (as in kWh/month) in my home?

jfparis,

@xahteiwi I missed the vote. What the answer

kzettel,

@xahteiwi The dishwasher is one of the things I haven't added to monitoring yet. Here's mine from last month:

@xahteiwi I don't have a freezer, dishwasher, or laundry dryer.

Lennart,

@xahteiwi Try a heatpump drier!

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@Lennart What makes you think I don't have one?

jinxd,
@jinxd@fosstodon.org avatar

@xahteiwi @Lennart Sounds like your dishwasher has a poor energy rating. I think my dishwasher uses 1500w at peak, but only in bursts, much less when cleaning. It usesaround 10w when drying. I find it amusing that "eco" programs run well over 3 hours (to save water?) but uses a lot more watts, which ofcourse is a lot less "eco" and wallet friendly.

@jinxd The dishwasher isn't inefficient, it just runs frequently. That's why over the course of a month, it takes the top spot.

☝️ For anyone interested, the most popular choice (the laundry dryer) actually takes the second spot in my home. The top consumer over time among these happens to be the dishwasher.

@xahteiwi I would like to test the same in my apartment. What did you use to measure the kWh? Just standard smartplug?

syphdias,

@xahteiwi I’d be interested in the Wattage numbers. I know my freezer-fridge combo uses about 20W on average (Most of the time 0 with spikes of 60W). Unfortunately, I have no graphs atm. I haven’t gotten around to procuring a RPi or something similar for HAss.

@xahteiwi Heating water and drying? We run hot water faucet next to dishwasher before starting it to ensure it's not filling with cold/cool water to start and disable that water heating. We usually turn off the drying cycle as well, just crack open the dishwasher at the end, give everything a shake, and let it air dry. Haven't instrumented it for power differences though.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@jerzone The issue here isn't that the dishwasher isn't energy efficient. It just runs way more often than people might think. 🙂

That's why I was being specific about kWh/month.

@xahteiwi yeah I was thinking this way also, dishwasher is used almost every day, which we can’t say about the laundry drier, also our one does have heat-pump so it is pretty nice to our electricity bill

nobodyinperson,
@nobodyinperson@fosstodon.org avatar

@xahteiwi We have a laundry dryer that in addition to a lot of electricity also consumes water when drying 🙃

Took me a while to understand why.

sashk,
@sashk@mastodon.social avatar

@xahteiwi which device do you use to monitor freezer power consumption?

also, you need to mention if dryer is electric or gas, because electric will consume much more...

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@sashk @xahteiwi gas dryers are pretty much non existent in Europe, I believe? Haven't ever seen a single one advertised in four countries...

sashk,
@sashk@mastodon.social avatar

@flameeyes @xahteiwi didn’t know. here in USA we have both. At least, for now.

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@sashk @xahteiwi yeah I know. Depending on country here things change a lot, but at least in the two flats I lived here in London I didn't even have gas lines...

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@flameeyes
A lot more gas in the US thanks to our Fisher-Price mains voltage 🤣

@flameeyes @sashk @xahteiwi my village it in the middle of forest about 20km from capital. What is gas line? :-D

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@flameeyes @sashk I've never heard of a gas powered laundry dryer. The only thing gas is common to use for over here is heating/hot water, and to a very limited degree, cooking.

@flameeyes @sashk @xahteiwi Gas dryer= Sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

You may want to re-create this poll with a longer time limit (1-7 days) to give more people time to notice and respond to it.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@kevin It was just a silly poll, not a scientific inquiry. 🙂
