Orange County valedictorian calls on school board members to resign at graduation
“Our teachers get paid virtually nothing, yet they protect their student body to the highest standard possible. What do they get in return? They’re called groomers by parents on Facebook. Instead of our school board backing these teachers, they buy into the narrative and concern themselves more with depriving students of their basic freedoms, releasing policies to take away Black history and forcibly outing students who are not heterosexual,” Mthethwa said, calling on the immediate resignation of three members of the Orange County School Board."
As someone in the UK who works with children and young people I have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people, What is being said here creates a red flag so large it would be too heavy to lift.
How can teachers raise concenrs about child welfare, when the school boards won't even back them when they do, how can US schools keep kids safe from genuine harm, e,g sexual abuse, neglect, emotional and physical abuse. In fact some of what is described here would come under MULTIPLE sections of the UK guidence on keeping kids safe.
"forcibly outing students who are not heterosexual," this is disgusting behaviour and constitutes abuse.
To the Florida teachers and school support staff who are doing the right thing and teaching in these conditions, thank you, you are doing a fantastic job and your very best under very difficult conditions and circumstances and deserve and should be getting every iota of support and respect from the communities you serve. Keep up the good work.
@SrRochardBunson To be valedictorian and bring this message… staggering. It means you have played every crappy institutional game and won them all. To take a stand after that, to turn around and face down the institutional elements after forcing them to recognize you within their own biased system… that is heroic stuff right there.
@SrRochardBunson Amazing! In case anyone else lives near an Orange County and wonders if this is that one - the article mentions Porterfield Park and google tells me that’s in Virginia. So this isn’t the “Orange County” in Florida, California, Indiana, New York, Texas, or North Carolina. I wish that article or that paper’s masthead had mentioned the State, those bestowing names on counties are too unoriginal.
