@Hey_Beth
Put this down to the GOP caucus which hasn’t done a goddamned thing except “investigate” Hunter & Pres. Biden this entire session. Even the “deal” they made to keep the Gov’t funded was broken, and all legislation they’ve proposed is so extreme it’s unworkable.
@Hey_Beth you say that like we're in charge. they let us vote for their chosen, party-curated candidates, who don't serve our interests. if we were actually in charge, 95 percent of all Senators and members of Congress would be at home being jerks to their neighbors, not in dc ruining this country.
@Hey_Beth Seems to me the first two years after Biden got elected produced a lot of legislation that affected every State in the union. Besides the the biggest ever bipartisan infrastructure bill passed, the IRA (with climate change provisions baked in and expected to exceed original investments), money to the IRS to focus on wealthy tax cheats (the first item on Speaker Johnson’s cut list) and then something happened, like always with midterms, and legislation to even authorize military promotions stall. 41.5% voted
@Hey_Beth I'm continually flabbergasted at how little the American public understands how government actually works.
That said, the Exec branch has always spearheaded and campaigned for legislation so leadership from the exec branch on legislation is not new... what's new is the vast dysfunction of Congress.
@Skoobie@Hey_Beth I don't know if it should be an age or time in office. I'm all for term limits, but I hesitate to put a hard limit on age (within reason). Some people don't hit their stride until they're a bit older (like me :o))
@_ohcoco_
I understand your perspective but I'd like to expand on the "within reason" part. I'm not suggesting we use the same mandatory retirement age as pilots (67) but I think 70 would be a fair line to draw in the sand. At the end of the day, the government is supposed to be representative of its citizens. The average citizen is 39. The average representative is 58. This disproportion is unhealthy. @Hey_Beth
@Skoobie@Hey_Beth I agree that we generally need younger representation, although I believe the wisdom and experience that comes with age is beneficial in many instances. Seventy seems reasonable for potus, with other positions open to those who are older. I don't think we should have people in office for thirty+ years, and certainly no one who is as old as some of our current members of Congress.
