Now that I've had it a couple weeks, I'm an even bigger fan of my new modular, repairable laptop from #Framework: lightweight, keyboard is a dream, comparable/better to MS Surfaces I've had (keyboard went bad).

BONUS: with the intro of this new series, they've put the older model on sale!

It's a million small choices like this that will help us reduce waste (particularly ewaste) & live more sustainably on the planet.

Me: Shit is getting real all over the world with this climate thing, record heat, record floods, record hail. People don't understand. It's going to hit everywhere and it's going to hit them. And it's only May.

Also Me: watches hail fall as second power outage of the day hits.

FYI Facebook has devolved to putting ads on people's personal profiles now and it's horrifying.

The difference is so stark coming to Masto. No algos, no ads, no suddenly discovering the overlords have decided to advertise spammy crap with your name on it (that you can't see btw; I didn't know it was happening until a friend was like "why are your pushing cash house offers?")

I'm truly, deeply alarmed at how the tech industry is trying to insert itself in every human interaction, getting between humans in every possible relationship, and they think that's "better" while absolutely destroying everything that makes society work.

The answer is MORE human-to-human interaction not LESS. FFS.

(screenshot from a substack that landed in my inbox, but you can see this same ethos everywhere, including strained attempts to portray chatbots with "theories of the mind")

The greenwashing gets sneakier all the time, but it's especially gross when gas companies promote gas as providing "clean air quality" (it's the opposite) in homes for disadvantaged folks via Habitats for Humanity.

The video of Trump glitching out, having a cognitive impairment moment... is really horrifying. Because the media won't touch it, the Trumpers will dismiss it, and a huge chunk of the country will still vote for this guy because they like his fascism. 🤬

When the wet bulb temperature deaths start in the US, they will start in the South. And they won't stop because there's nothing like the necessary infrastructure to cool/dry people at scale.

@mttaggart on the podcast ep I just released today, I was chatting with Jamie Liu (a resilience coordinator) about how people didn't go to things like cooling centers (even though they needed to) because they weren't used to going there; that we needed more 3rd spaces that could act as resilience hubs when things get bad. Of course, that's "infrastructure" and good luck with building that in TX (I mean, i wish they would, but...)

Greg Abbott just pardoned a man who posed he was going to kill Black Lives Matter protesters and claim self-defense, then killed a BLM protester and claimed self-defense but was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

North Carolina Republicans are advancing a bill to ban masks in public, even for those with legitimate health reasons and concerns to wear them.

I keep saying we need more hopeful climate stories and that will only happen is IF WE WRITE THEM.

I highly encourage you to write your own story for Grist's Imagine 2200 contest.

Not only do you have a chance to win money, you'll have gone through the exercise of envisioning a better world.

Be brave! We won’t change the world if we all stay inside our comfort zones.

"Yacht Season has opened and orcas throughout the Strait of Gibraltar are excited! This growing fad has replaced the previous one of carrying dead fish on their heads, and 9 out of 10 orcas involved in yacht sinking agree it's a more satisfying hobby, one they expect to continue for years to come.

"Avenge Gerta!" is a common whistle but, when pressed, most yacht-seeking orcas claim they don't even know Gerta. They're just having some good old-fashioned orca fun." — The Daily Orca

The answer is distributed power.

Distribute all the power.

Electrical power (solar, renewables).

Political power (democracy, anti-imperialism).

Economic power (labor, capital).

It will take working collectively but it can happen. It's already happening. Every union certified, rooftop solar installed, fascist voted out of office matters.

Readers only want dystopia or escapism?

How about a vision of a future worth fighting for? How about a realistic take on the world we're living in but with a pathway out of the mess?

Someday, they'll decide you're ready for such things. Probably not until readers create another breakaway success like KSR's Ministry for the Future or Becky Chambers' Monk & Robot.

In the meantime, I'm making a list where you can find such things...

An ongoing pattern in the AI march:

  • the hardware efficiency improves
  • the software efficiency improves

So I continue to argue that energy consumption as a PRIMARY criticism of AI is going to be unpersuasive, as incentives drive down the energy costs with time, and all critique of the energy costs is just as applicable to conventional cloud computing, which we have already accepted into our social bargain

(and which underpins every single tech salary)

so instead:

https://redeem-tomorrow.com/the-average-ai-criticism-has-gotten-lazy-and-thats-dangerous

susankayequinn,
@susankayequinn@wandering.shop avatar

@danilo I agree with it as a poor central strategy. I made the same argument early on re: quality, when people were basing their arguments against AI because it was lower quality than human work. If you hinge your argument there, it could fall apart, when the REAL argument is moral (theft; and all the other things you list). I'd say the energy argument is also moral, but you're correct that it's one of many moral components of the argument against AI.
