hacks4pancakes,

One of the reasons I really wish there were QTs on here is to make it not look like I am endorsing or criticizing something else someone else is endorsing or criticizing. Like, they share something interesting but they share their personal opinion about it and I disagree slightly with some nuance. That's not trolling, it's not a pile-on, it's just context that RTs are not endorsements.

hacks4pancakes,

@GossiTheDog me too, but there's still that risk that somebody sees only the RT and gets the wrong idea.

regphunt,

@hacks4pancakes @GossiTheDog It also makes threads really hard to follow. A lot of the time I have no idea what someone is talking about unless I trace it all back.

@hacks4pancakes @GossiTheDog My solution for finding the right balance on the QT problem has been Re:toot for iOS (https://retoot.app) by @simonbs.

    @GossiTheDog @hacks4pancakes boosts are “posts” and get deleted, too.

    Well, on your server at least. Whatever is cached on every other server could still be shown!

    @matt @GossiTheDog @hacks4pancakes So, and I’m only bringing this up, because I learned it today, apparently on Mastodon, you can set auto deleting posts to ignore certain categories of posts, like if you boosted your own posts or bookmark them.

    cybeej,

    @hacks4pancakes a few bad apples spoil the bushel

    @hacks4pancakes Ice cubes has QTs. I think it just shows as a link to the original if you don’t have it.

    whereisthespai,

    @hacks4pancakes yeah. Like, I wasn’t kidding when I quote tweeted something while noting that I was endorsing it. That’s a useful thing to be able to indicate or disindicate. =\

    securityskeptic,

    @hacks4pancakes
    Interesting. I never thought of RTs as endorsements but simply as "here's something you might find worth reading".

    bhawthorne,

    @hacks4pancakes At this point, pretty much every Mastodon app except Gargron’s supports quote-boosts.

    And in any case, a reply functions much like a quote boost.

    hacks4pancakes,

    @bhawthorne that’s really mobile-centric

    bhawthorne,

    @hacks4pancakes Many of the Mastodon apps (including @MonaApp) have desktop versions on one or more platforms as well. I see you are using Ivory for iOS. Ivory also has a MacOS desktop version.

    hacks4pancakes,

    @bhawthorne @MonaApp Ivory does not have this feature.

    bhawthorne,

    @hacks4pancakes @MonaApp My mistake. It looks like it is still on their TBD list.

    bhawthorne,

    @hacks4pancakes @MonaApp https://tapbots.com/ivory/ claims that Ivory does quote posts.

    insanitybit,

    @hacks4pancakes Lack of QT has been a disaster tbh, I basically don't use Mastodon because I see content that I would like to boost, but add some nuance to, but I can't.

    ChickenPwny,

    @hacks4pancakes I do not miss quote tweets just enables the shifty side of people

    jerry,

    @hacks4pancakes an increasing amount of the fediverse supports QT. If you find the message you want to quote, copy the link to the post, and paste it to the bottom of your message, it will appear as a QT in many mastodon mobile apps and just about all non-mastodon fediverse instances. For people who can’t see the QT, they’ll still be able to follow the link to the post

    jerry,

    @hacks4pancakes it’s not ideal, but it’s what I’ve got right now

    EmperorHenry,

    @jerry @hacks4pancakes

    It didn't do that for me.

    jerry,

    @EmperorHenry @hacks4pancakes can you point me to the post where you tried it and I’ll show you what it looks like on apps and other instances that support displaying QTs

    crmsnbleyd,

    @hacks4pancakes link it and add your comments maybe?

    sindarina,

    @hacks4pancakes I disagree, slightly and with some nuance, by linking to the original toot, and suggesting that the reader click through to read your opinion on the same topic;

    https://infosec.exchange/@hacks4pancakes/110474805662487785

    hacks4pancakes,

    @sindarina it’s less than ideal. There should be a native feature not a kludge.

    sindarina,

    @hacks4pancakes Why is it a kludge, though? You're linking to something else, and providing commentary on it. This is how the web works.

    If you're unwilling to use the tools you already have available, I would argue that it is a matter of habit, a demand for something to be shaped just as you're used to, instead of something that’s actually missing from the platform?

    Even with the default 500 characters, there's plenty of room to provide a preview, and you're on an instance with a LOT more.

    What's stopping you, aside from convenience, and nostalgia?

    hacks4pancakes,

    @sindarina I do do it, but there's no reason that the application shouldn't be fully featured and properly display linkages like most other Web 2.0 platforms just because we can include raw links.

    cascade,

    @hacks4pancakes It's not a kludge, it's the same way Twitter does it. Try it out; link to your own tweet and check the QT count. It'll say there's 1 QT even though you just put a link to the tweet. It looks the exact same, too, and you can tell from notifications that it's just what quote-tweeting does anyway.

    puzzler,

    @hacks4pancakes the couple fediverse softwares that do include QTs just link to the original post below the comment. It’s a bit more manual, but would still work on Masto

  • hacks4pancakes,

    @krypt3ia yea, it's not ideal though. I want to give them credit and views if they are sharing something interesting.
