Thought experiment:

X creates a mastodon instance. Not one that bridges to X or federates X to the fediverse, but a native Mastodon instance. Do we have the same complaints about "consent" with them becoming part of the fediverse?

Is it the company that is objectionable, or the fact that it's not a native fediverse app that is the problem?

bhawthorne,

@jerry I would look at a native Xitter ActivityPub instance the same way I look at every instance: do they moderate their users consistent with the values of the mastodon community or not? There are dozens of ActivityPub instances which are suspended by nearly every mastodon instance due to unmoderated racism or something similar.

I would expect that a Xitter ActivityPub instance would exhibit similar lack of moderation and would be defederated within a week.

As for people seeing my posts, if I post something publicly, that means publicly. I am under no illusion that its distribution can be effectively restricted.

Yes, I am now aware of the bsky bridge. No, I haven’t blocked them yet. Yes, I will take a closer look.

bhawthorne,

@jerry @kpwn Perhaps any complainers should be directed to move to infosec.space. We can call it airlocking, and infosec.space should have a policy of suspending any domain that even one of the 72 users requests. Before you know it, they will have that unfederated instance.

@black_intellect Can we just do the right thing and nationalize all the medical insurance companies? Everyone in the USA deserves healthcare without a profit motive.

@GossiTheDog @aral This is why I have always found it weird that people create domains in Libya, Tuvalu, Afghanistan, and all the other national two-letter TLDs that have some “cute” meaning in English.

Do you know about the # Toodles hashtag?

I first heard the word Toodles from YouTuber LoeWhaley. Clearly based on the old toodle-oo expression meaning, “Goodbye”, Toodles has developed into way of being seemingly polite while meaning something akin to “get lost”. I first saw it used on Mastodon by @GottaLaff who is frequently the recipient of comments from, let us say, people who make Mastodon less enjoyable. Rather than just silently blocking people, the Toodles hashtag alerts its followers of someone who has pissed off Laffy (or whoever posts the hashtag) enough to get blocked. What you do with that information is entirely up to you.

bhawthorne,

@GottaLaff I heard it when I was a young ‘un in Leicester, England, but back then it just had the polite meaning, like “ta ta” or “cheers.” Did Gidget use it in the nice way, or the new way?

  • bhawthorne,

@Pagan_Animist Don’t know what hardiness zone you are in, but there are good sugar snap hybrid peas with as little as 61 days to maturity. My concern would be how much light will you have a month from now? Flower and fruit set usually need good light.

Early beets are another good option. If you lose the sun before the root crop ripens in couple of months, the greens are delicious!

    bhawthorne,

@Pagan_Animist Oh, if you are in 6b and have supplemental LED grow lights, I’d think you should be all set for peas or beets or even salad greens. I miss growing in 6b; I’ve been in 5b for the last 20 years and the growing season up here in the hills is so much shorter.

    bhawthorne,

@Pagan_Animist Any sunny windows you could do a little window garden in?

It personally would not surprise me to get a 9-0 or 8-1 SCOTUS ruling in favor of Trump because of DOJ and Congressional inaction on the matter of insurrection. That seems like the liberal legalist way of avoiding the issue and any potential political blowback.

Which would suck, obviously, but I have zero expectations for this case.

    bhawthorne,

@gwynnion Although Congress already voted in 2021 that Trump incited insurrection in his second impeachment. He was not convicted in the senate, but the deciding votes in the senate stated they did not vote to convict because Trump was no longer in office, and they read the impeachment clause as only applying to current officers.

Well, many of us do have quote-toots built into our apps (like Mona). The apps and web interface from Mastodon gGmbH don’t support quote-boosts, but I’m not sure how many people use those interfaces compared to using Mastodon apps from other developers.

I wonder if anyone has analyzed posts to see what the distribution of users among apps is. https://mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/111896429669784060

I know I have said in the not too distant past that I never read articles in the Style section, but this one caught my eye in the Washington Post this morning.

    TL;DR
Local graffiti artists in Los Angeles create a 55-story artwork on the windows of a luxury residential development in Los Angeles being built by a Chinese firm Oceanwide Holdings that has been “on hold” (effectively abandoned) since 2019.

The city, of course, sees the graffiti as vandalism and has arrested several artists. My question is, if someone builds 55 stories of a development in a city and abandons it incomplete, how is that not a worse crime, vandalism against the entire populace of the city, than some artists putting paint on the windows of the abandoned buildings?

New Report Raises Concerns About Long Covid in Children.

A large analysis published Wednesday in the journal Pediatrics underscores the toll long COVID can take on children, in some cases leading to neurological, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and behavioral symptoms in the months after an acute infection.

    Published study: https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/doi/10.1542/peds.2023-062570/196606/Postacute-Sequelae-of-SARS-CoV-2-in-Children?autologincheck=redirected

    @auscovid19

    Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/07/well/live/long-covid-children.html

“Long Covid in the U.S., in adults and in kids, is a serious problem,” said Dr. Ziyad AL-Aly, chief of research and development at the V.A. St. Louis Health Care System and a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis, who studies the condition but was not involved in the new report. He said that the paper, which drew on numerous studies of long Covid in children, is “important” and illustrates that the condition can affect multiple organ systems. The new review suggested that 10 to 20 percent of children in the United States who had Covid developed long Covid. However, Dr. Suchitra Rao, a pediatric infectious disease expert at Children's Hospital Colorado and co-author on the paper, acknowledged that there are “lots of caveats” with the prevalence estimates used to arrive at that number. For example, some of the studies included looked only at the very small percentage of children who were hospitalized for Covid. Like adults, children who had more severe cases of Covid have a greater risk of lingering symptoms or new complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts the prevalence of long Covid closer to 1 percent of children who have had Covid. (The estimate in adults is 7 percent.)
    image/png

    bhawthorne,
    bhawthorne,

@rolandelli @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @BE @auscovid19 10-30% of adults (depending on the study) who get an infection from SARSCoV2 have symptoms lasting long enough to be considered long COVID (1-6 months depending on the definition).

7-10% of adults who had an acute infection currently still have long COVID.

So I assume the NYT just doesn’t get the distinction, and in this case 10-20% of kids had symptoms for the studies minimum period, and 1% of all kids who had an infection are currently experiencing long COVID symptoms.

I also expect that is a dramatic underestimate.

    https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2024/02/06/Zombie-Deer-Disease-Bad-As-Sounds/

    bhawthorne,

@seachanger The good news is that CWD only spreads among cervids (deer, moose, elk) and cannot be transmitted to humans. The frightening thing is that as a prion disease, the infection vector is not alive, so it can stay infectious in the soil for a very long time. Most spread in eastern North America appears to be related to deer farms and other locations with dense herds of deer.

New tech tip on my website!

    Readable Email and Web Pages

It's 2024. If you're still designing websites or email like you would design an 8.5x11" promotional hand-out on a sheet of paper, you really haven't been paying attention to how people use the internet over the past decade.

    https://hyperborea.org/tech-tips/readable-email/

    bhawthorne,

@KelsonV I wish that services like mailchimp would let you preview not only desktop and mobile views but also screen reader. At a minimum, people should have the Speak Screen option enabled on an iPhone, the load the mobile version of the newsletter, and swipe down two fingers from the top to read the screen. And close their eyes. That will give at least some indication of how it appears to people using screen readers.
