@geekmomprojects @lisamelton how did you make these LED displays?
Btw, on Mastodon - it's worth using hashtags to get people to discover your stuff. Like, in this case , you get the idea ;)

@geekmomprojects If you can ...

  • integrate a battery
  • add
  • report via which side is on top

Then I will throw my away. :D

Edit: Very cool thing. 😎👍

@akop thank tit. I don't know if it would survive being rolled, but maybe into a very soft surface...

@geekmomprojects Now to put the controller and a battery inside so it is evenly weighted for proper rolling.

@geekmomprojects this is awesome! How are the LEDs placed, and how do you only get a small section to light up?

geekmomprojects,
@geekmomprojects@mastodon.social avatar

@nashenas I used the same technique in an edge lit clock a while back, and this blog post (https://www.geekmomprojects.com/edge-lit-seven-segment-display/) describes the technique. I'm revisiting the project, because I've found a super skinny (2.7mm wide) LED strip that works with 1/8" thick acrylic sheet and makes these kinds of projects easier.

@geekmomprojects thank you! I'm going to try this out in the future. This was a gift I made for my brother a couple years ago. The car is actually a second layer of acrylic. Both pieces of acrylic are independently lit so I kept the snow areas white and changed the color of the car (did not photo well but looked great in person).

Two layers of etched acrylic. The first layer has a forest in the background and is lit with white to make it look like the snow from the original photo. The car in the second layer is lit in orange but looks like red and yellow bands due to camera effects.

@nashenas I bet it looks really amazing IRL!
