Not to be too judgmental but I’ve had a site survive lots of traffic and traffic at the same time with zero downtime with some basic Nginx caching. So seems like a you problem. https://news.itsfoss.com/mastodon-link-problem/

After transition? CARBS

But, like, I have no idea where this came from. Legitimately. Wtf is going on here

yulian,

@hazelweakly I think it's just whatever your body needs, and as your hormones changes so do your needs.

Though, I've always loved carbs and my hormones are at normal levels for a male. And I have metabolic syndrome, so carbs are bad for me. But shoveling a bunch of fresh baked bread, followed by a tub of ice cream sounds amazing, I just can't (often, I do it on rare occasions or events).

My favorite genres of animated movies:

  • sapphic and queer love
  • trans coded coming of age
  • traumatized parent tries to raise young kid and struggles with not traumatizing them while young kid deals with being torn between external expectations and internal desires
  • strong female lead kicks ass and is allowed to be both powerful and pretty

@hazelweakly @theogrin i loved turning red, and that was before I had 2 girls. My wife also loved it. It's definitely something i will have my girls watch as they get older.

Is there a documented, credible source for why Jack Dorsey has distanced himself from ?

I know the narrative is that he now doesn't have as much power and influence over the platform and protocol. But what is that based on? The fact that he deleted his BlueSky account and now hangs on Nostr?

That doesn't make sense.

yulian,
@yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

@fromjason @proximacentauri Jack Dorsey has fuck you money. His actions don't need to make sense when he doesn't care about money

yulian,
@yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

@fromjason @proximacentauri dunno. I thought Elon was a somewhat reasonable but eccentric person a few years ago. Turned out to be a lunatic.

We don't know how business savvy Jack is. He seems to only care about Twitter clones.

He loves crypto. And BlueSky isn't a fan of crypto Community to the level Nostr is.

I have s Nostr account and Jack is relishing his time there. Could be as simple as he likes it better

@geerlingguy can you slot a RPi CM3 or CM4 into it instead? Im working on replacing the guts of an old netbook I love with an RPi, but lvds/display stuff is harrowing.

I would consider taking the guts out of this and use it in that if you can switch between modules

yulian,

@matdevdug that happens fairly regularly, and I forget the reasons. It's usually related to the number of flags or controversial stuff in the comments. I know Xe Iaso's posts regularly get hit with it.

Whenever I'm trying to work through or dissect a significant amount of code I find that I'm not really thinking linearly.

Most of the value I derive is into a third dimension, such as relationships, commonalities, and other patterns.

If I could ever cement that process enough perhaps there's more tooling to help understand larger swaths of code more intuitively, because file by file down the rabbit hole just doesn't cut it.

yulian,
@yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly @baweaver I actually keep code in my head very similarly. It tends to be very spatial. I tend to zoom in and out from micro to macro concepts. Almost akin to going from like clusters in space to galaxies to planets and back. But also a bit like a 3D graph database.

It allows me to connect concepts, topics and disparate domains of knowledge that don't normally get connected to create obscure solutions to problems.

sometimes ya really just gotta wonder wtf you're doing with your life when you're trying to pull a 1.5G container over a phone hotspot

yulian,
@yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly I'm regularly downloading ISOs and other nonsense at 2gb+. I have a 4.8gb zip of sources of an old MMO I got like 2 days ago.

My phone is a very diverse place of large files. I once had a k3s cluster running temporarily on it to debug something when my laptop was dead.

yulian,
@yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly yes, but it was painful. k3s doesn't run natively on Android. So I used Andronix (or maybe it was UserLand) to run a VM of a Linux distro, that I then ran k3s on and some helm charts, accessed through Termux. It was slow, and painful (also no keyboard, all touchscreen typing). But got me the results I needed.

This week I have been deeply surrounded by death, decay, heartbreak, and unraveling relationships. Most of it isn't mine directly, but I love my friends deeply and feel things a lot.

Which is to say: can you tell me a happy memory or interaction or anecdote you have of us? Or something this week that made you feel happy to be alive? I would love to hear what you have to say :blobhaj_heart:

yulian,
@yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly my wife and I had some of the most fun time playing Baldur's Gate 3 together. We rarely find games we can play together in genres we like. We also have a young toddler and a newborn. So gaming time has been minimal.

We found a way to play this week and it's the most fun we have had in a long time that wasn't kids related.

And my oldest is now forming complete complex sentences and watching the marvel of a little potato lump turning into a human is such a marvel to watch for us.

The week after Thanksgiving will always be deeply bittersweet to me now.

This month, and next week in particular, mark the anniversary of the Hachyderm incident. @nova, @Taniwha, @dma, @malte, @quintessence, and I worked around the clock for over a week to migrate Hachyderm from Nóva's basement into Europe

I am forever indebted to that incident for launching my public speaking career, and to this team for becoming my beloved friends

And to Nóva, for chasing the dopamine, for tying us together

yulian,
@yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

@hazelweakly I started following you through Nova and her retweets of the events last year during Thanksgiving week. I only knew Nova through hachyderm, so I only knew her at the minimal surface level and and still realized how inspirational she was. Enough to be completely distraught with her passing. I can only imagine what you felt knowing her more closely.

But I am also glad that she helped you grow also. I have been enjoying your posts and I agree with many things you talk about.

    @matdevdug eero is I think currently the best of the bunch. Other than that stepping up to Asus routers in mesh works. TPlink Deco is good too and cheap. They use some of their Omada enterprise tech but at consumer level.

    Then you can go enterprise grade with TPLInk Omada access points that can mesh with each other if needed.

    But if you want install and forget, Eero is nice. I used to use Google wifi ages ago and it works fine, my parents still use it. But I am not sure how they are these days

    Thinking about thoughtful regulation: we're really bad at it. GDPR is a mess, FedRAMP is interesting, and almost all of the regulations we've tried to enforce on large corporations don't trickle down to meaningful benefits to end users.

    For example: Email. We have a huge spam problem and no regulation for addressing it. We also have a huge interoperability problem. Companies can't easily migrate from one to the other. For calendars? We have nothing.

    yulian,
    @yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

    @hazelweakly I've been pondering on designing an email-like system on top or ActivityPub or Matrix. Where you would need to accept a sender before receiving from them. Would also solve newsletters and such, but no spam.

    But I haven't had the time to figure out the details or if it's even feasible. Plus it has the adoption issue any new service or protocol has.

    I just watched a coworker give a short demo of setting up a React project and writing some tests and a component.

    React, JavaScript, unit testing: the sheer amount of "you have to already know you need this" in this ecosystem is staggering. How is anyone supposed to get started with this?? We, the programming industry, have created a monstrosity.

    (No disrespect to my coworker; he gave a good demo. This is a critique of programming at large, and JS in particular.)

    yulian,
    @yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

    @tylermumford that is why most of these have some kind of create-*-app. This is VueJS:

    ✔ Project name: … <your-project-name>
    ✔ Add TypeScript? … No / Yes
    ✔ Add JSX Support? … No / Yes
    ✔ Add Vue Router for Single Page Application development? … No / Yes
    ✔ Add Pinia for state management? … No / Yes
    ✔ Add Vitest for Unit testing? … No / Yes
    ✔ Add an End-to-End Testing Solution? … No / Cypress / Playwright
    ✔ Add ESLint for code quality? … No / Yes
    ✔ Add Prettier for code formatting? … No / Yes

    yulian,
    @yulian@hachyderm.io avatar

    @tylermumford true, that makes sense. But unfortunately that's just a problem with the ecosystem. Vanilla JS and CSS has been demonized for so long that everyone built giant frameworks on top and forgot that there is a progression.

    It is why I support freecodecamp.org they start with the basics in vanilla JS and slowly add frameworks ontop. Bootstrap, jQuery, SASS, React, and redux in that order.

    yulian,

    @gamingonlinux what would you recommend as alternatives? I have started a list, planning to write a blog post, but what are some solutions you think would help.

    Discord is used because it's social, easy, and everyone has it installed. And there is an app for it to streamline the experience and make it consistent.

    So what would your shortlist be for every joe shmoe to easily build, collaborate and share information. That is free, hosted for them, and easy to use. And on the web.
